Help Johnny out.

A little bit about me:

I am 25, single, I play online poker for a living, I live in Columbus, OH, and I hate winter. One of my best friends lives in Irvine CA, and my little brother is probably going to transfer to UNLV next fall. I have several acquaintances from 2+2 at both places that I know would turn into good friends if I were to be around them more often. I have bounced back between the two selections at least 30 times in the last two months. So, I have decided to leave the decision to my fellow STTers

p.s. If there is any further information that you require to help me with my decision, post a question in this thread.

So without any further ado:

I vote SoCal, I think you can have a more balanced life there while still having plenty of opportunities to play live poker.

There's more to life than just poker, and I think it's easier to be reminded of that in SoCal than in Vegas.

I spent the first 22 years of my life in SoCal. It's cool. But there are some major downsides... major.

I honestly can't for the life of me figure out why everybody in the world doesn't live in Vegas. I'm glad they don't, but I don't understand how they choose to live somewhere else.

I really, really don't get it.

The most important consideration:

There's an ATM machine at the Hard Rock Casino, at the Northeast section of the casino floor that will let you withdraw $2,000 from a Neteller card at 11:59pm, and then another $2,000 at 12:01am.

If you have 2 Neteller cards, like any self-respecting SNGer, that means you can get your hands on $8K in cash in 2 minutes without talking to a human being.

And, of course, they pay it in Benjis.

Vegas would be the biggest mistake you ever made bro

SoCal you can play all the poker you want, but you can also avoid gambling very easily if things aren't going well. That'd be mighty difficult in Vegas.

I lived in Long Beach for over a year and moved just a few months ago...I did not like LA at all, dirty, smoggy, huge, sprawling, traffic filled mess...but it is a real city, and the weather is pretty great most of the time...Vegas would be v v bad, IMHO

Irie, I'm curious why you think this. Having only visited Vegas a few times, I've often wondered why so many people are moving there. Not that it's not a fun city to visit - but what is it about LIVING there that makes it so great? I'm just not feeling it when I'm there.

Just remember to factor in the cost of living for whatever city you are thinking about moving to. Depending on what you pick, the cost of living difference could be HUGE. Some places in California, $1000 a month on rent will get you a shoe box sized apartment; other places you'd be living like a king with $1000 a month. I suggest you research this using cost of living estimation . Good luck in whatever you decide.

Las Vegas is a 40 minute flight for $129 from So CAl. When I was single I would go to Vegas 6-10 times a year. My best friend was going to Grad School at the time at UNLV. So if you have the money, I would pick So Cal, you get the best of both. And the guy who said a one bedroom is $1000, I would like to know where that is? Try $1500+ in Orange County for something nice. I am paying $3500 for a 3 bedroom house right now.

Re: Help Johnny out.

I voted SoCal - IF you can afford the cost of living, that is (my bro just moved to Vegas from there, he's paying $880 a month for 1100 Sq ft in LV, compared to $1700 a month for equivalent space near Irvine).

As others have pointed out, there are many more ways to enjoy non-poker life in SoCal. I believe this would make it much easier to get away from the games to de-stress and recharge when needed. And as rohjoh points out, it's a quick and cheap trip from SoCal to LV. If your brother does end up at UNLV, it seems that you could have the option to hang with him for a few weeks or more at a time to experience the Vegas games, then get away from Vegas "life" by going back to SoCal when you need to.

You may want to ditch the Grand Cherokee, though.

Good luck with your decision.

All you need is a bank account and an email. Those are both easy to get under any name you'd like.

One thing that amazes me on this forum is the fact that so many people don't seem to have checking accounts (not you, Curtains, the young blokes), as evidenced by how difficult it seems to be to send me a check for STTF-HUC.

As old-fashioned as it might seem, having a bank account is actually the best way to move large amounts of money from somewhere else into your hands.

Plus, you need one for each Neteller account if you want to be able to do everything instantly, and Neteller is the best way to move money around on line.

It's so funny that people think that if you live in Vegas, you essentially live in a casino and whores walk around in your front yard.

Vegas is a great desert community with a thriving economy. It's just like Scottsdale or Palms Springs in terms of weather and housing, but you have the luxury of unlimited gourmet restaurants and some of the best entertainment in the world.

I'm not sure why everybody has the impression that you would be forced to become a low-life casino dweller destined to gamble away your life.

The majority of people who live here go to a casino less than once a month unless they work there. I spend less time in casinos now than I did when I lived in California.

Why live in Vegas?

1. It's sunny every day
2. No hurricanes, tornados, or earthquakes. The worst weather catastrophe you can face here is a sunburn.
3. Great food.
4. Great entertainment.
5. Everybody that lives here makes a lot of money because a lot of money moves through this town.
6. Everybody that comes here wants to party.
7. It's still half as expensive as SoCal.
8. No state income tax.

If I had a bajillion dollars I'd live in Malibu. Otherwise, Vegas baby.

Re: Help Johnny out.

Just for the sake of debate...

Why live in Vegas?

1. It's sunny every day

This is a misleading statement. Vegas has plenty of weather. It snows a little at least once a year. The winters get cold. It has a decent rainy season every year. Driving sucks in the rain in Vegas. Lots of mini-flooding.

2. No hurricanes, tornados, or earthquakes. The worst weather catastrophe you can face here is a sunburn.

Sun damage is always underestimated. Id rather die in a hurricane then of skin cancer. Even outside of Vegas you should wear sunblock most every day during summer months.

3. Great food.

I found Vegas restaurants to be run of the mill cookie cutter cafeterias. The casinos house some excellent fine dining places, but half of them are simply bogus overpriced food you can get anywhere. I found little character in any place to eat outside of a casino. Many experienced diners enjoy looking for quaint private places providing an atmosphere. There are 100 privately owned restaurants with character in the bay area for every one you might find in Vegas.

4. Great entertainment.

I have little to argue about this. Vegas has by far the most entertainment of any city I have ever lived. Every form of entertainment, and lots of it. Provided you have management over your spending/gambling habits...May I remind you that 90% plus of people do not posses the same will power a typical 2+2er has.

5. Everybody that lives here makes a lot of money because a lot of money moves through this town.

Taken literally this statement is funny, but... To say the economy is great and there is massive potential to do well in Vegas is very true.

6. Everybody that comes here wants to party.

This is just as much a reason as any for some people to not want to live in Vegas.

7. It's still half as expensive as SoCal.
Ug, no argument here.

8. No state income tax.
indeed indeed.

If you move to Southern California, make sure NOT to live in Orange County. Despite what you may see on TV, the OC is full of boring, white, conserative families.

Move North or South to LA or San Diego respectively. Stay out of the middle.

Here's the thing: how long are you relocating for? If its for a long time, then definitely Socal- more balanced life, great place, etc., etc...

If its for just a year or two, then I'd say Vegas. Endless parties, tons of poker, a great time for a few years...
