Tipping Question

Happy Hour paid for by the company, do you still tip a buck at the bar when you get the drink?

Re: Tipping Question

Yes, tip the bartenders.

No. Whoever is paying will tip at the end.

No, they won't. At least not worth a damn.

yes.

Re: Tipping Question

Generally, no, as the company should be tipping on the whole tab if not already added by the joint. If the bartender is a really hot chick, though, you should tip.

Jake is correct the company does tip at the end, but it seems like I should still tip when I get a drink.

Yes. The bill at the end will likely be huge and I really doubt the person signing it is going to give a 15-20% tip on it.

Re: Tipping Question

It was discussed in an earlier post that it's best tip while your drinks are coming because otherwise you're liable to get bad service. Also, to the OP, was it happy hour like your boss said "Hey, let's all go to the bar?" or did your company bring in bartenders for a private thing? You could also just find out whether or not your company is just paying for the drinks or if they're including a tip.

Re: Tipping Question

I think its unlikely that your company will leave a tip unless it was rolled into the price that they were quoted by the bar - whichever admin set up the event and is handling the money will need reciepts for everything and can't just tack on a nice sized tip.

So either:
a) tips were included in the cost of the event, which means they will be lousy tips at best, or

b) tips weren't included and the bartenders are going to get majorly screwed

So I would just tip like I normally do. I mean, the worst that can happen is that you better service because you're the only one tipping. $1/drink is still cheap, especially when you start ordering all the top-shelf liquor you'd never shell out for otherwise.

Why not? Are you worried you're gonna be too generous giving the bartender $1/drink?

I can never figure out why so many posters on this board constantly try to find ways to weasel out of tipping people, or tipping less than they should.

you tip - and it's not really close

are you worried about the 10 bucks?

The bartender can make better use of the $7 than you can.

Re: Tipping Question

People here should also remember that often when the bar/restaurant includes a gratuity in a check, the bartender/waiter doesn't see any of that.

Sure we do. I had a party of 8 the other night (parties of 8 or above automatically have 15% gratuity added to their check), and it was a guaranteed $13.96 for me.

Then you work at a good restaurant. I know of a lot of places that don't.

Lots of interesting replies. Here is what I know. Comapny opens a tab for the everning and from all sources tips well. I was talking to my group about tipping and said I hope everyone tips tonight and they all looked at me like I was insane. I intend to tip a buck for drinks for a few reasons, but mostly for faster service. However it seems like OOT is divided on this issue so I won't fire anyone on my team for not tipping.

Sure, especially if the barmaids are hot and it'll get you better service.

Re: Tipping Question

i almost always tip 20% out. and i always tip bartenders 1$, even if its just a simple G & T or something

in this case, i think the company should foot the bill and that includes an addition for gratuity

Re: Tipping Question

i think most places do stuff like that, even crappy/mid grade places. however, we might differ on our opinions of crappy-to-middle of the road

Who cares if they are tipping at the end... tip a buck and make the bartender your friend.. It's a win/win situation!

Re: Tipping Question

I meant good in its treatment of its waitstaff. I've known some very nice restaurants that treated their waiters like [censored] and very bad restaurants that treated their waiters like gold (and vice versa). Then again, maybe it's just selective memory.
