Best ever \'B\' side?

I'll put up a couple to start things off.

1) 'Acquiesce' by Oasis. Better than anything they have done since Morning Glory (apart from stop crying your heart out), not that that is so hard.

2) 'Series of Dreams' by Bob Dylan. AFAIK, this was never an album track, which is pretty shocking considering how good a track it is.

'Talk Show Host' - Radiohead
'Jack the Ripper' - Morrissey

"So Sister" by The Verve -

I'd put "It's Good To Be Free" by Oasis in there - the way that feedback rides over the track is incredible (I think in the liner notes of Masterplan, they called it Cocaine Psychosis"

Rain - by the Beatles - I THINK it was a B-side to Paperback Writer - could be wrong - it was a single, not an album release - pretty sure it was a b-side

Re: Best ever \'B\' side?

Too long ago for me to remember, but it was the Beatles who actually broke the mold by making B sides more than just covers of other people's tunes. They've gotta be up there for that alone, but also because John Lennon's stuff was usually on the "B" side, because it wasn't as commercial or inoffensive as McCartney's stuff and their lighter stuff. Beatles fans would sometimes be anxious to listen to the B side first when a new album or single came out.

yeah, I agree.. the "end of thread" thing usually doesn't work, especially when you declare your own post the thread-ender. that's like declaring your own post a POTD, it's just something that somebody else has to do

regardless, the end of thread thing is kind of lame

Re: Best ever \'B\' side?

My favorites are:

Pennies by The Smashing Pumpkins, although that one actually did get some radio play. Maybe that makes it something other than a real b-side. If so, then I'm going to go with The Aeroplane Flies High or actually, it'd probably be any of about 5 or 6 other songs from The Aeroplane Flies High box set (the Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness singles) by the same Smashing Pumpkins. Some people consider Pisces Iscariot to be a B-Sides album, but that's a bit grey, so I won't say anything from that, or else Starla would be by far and away the best.

Lewis by Radiohead

I thought it started a bit of the vibe that they then carried on with Revolver/St. Pepper and so forth -

was sorta the start of it all - plus one of the first music videos -

Actually, doesn't a "true" B side have to be originally available only on the single? Walrus was available on Magical Mystery Tour.

Rain & Hey, Hey as mentioned.

Child Of The Moon, Memo From Turner, & Don't Know Why by the Stones.

oh, I don't know about the exact rules, I just know Walrus was once released as a B-side, but thank god for MMT.

It's so annoying that so many good Beatles song never appeared on their original full albums.

Past Masters, mofo. Also, get the Beatles Capitol Albums Vol. 1 if you haven't yet. Not exactly hidden stuff but good stuff that's not on many albums in stereo/mono.

Re: Best ever \'B\' side?

Big fan of the Yellow Ledbetter/Footsteps responses, (although Footsteps may not qualify on a bit of a technicality; its a redo of the music with new lyricsof a song on the Temple of the Dog album, the name of which escapes me at the moment)

Anyways, I'm reasonably sure Erotic City was a B-Side, and if so, it's that, and it's not even close.
