Took a shot at 10/20 short, got feelings hurt
I tried out 6-max 10/20 on pokerroom and I managed to lose 23 BBs in a little over 60 hands. This seems awful to me. I've been analyzing my hands and I feel like I didn't play all that bad although there's obviously something wrong going on. Should I pay so much attention to the results of one "shot" went bad and go down or try again?

well you cannot judge it based on 60 hands. ive seen depressing stretches where i cant even win a single pot in 60 hands, but it doesnt matter in the long run if you know youre playing well. you should watch the table for a little while before joining, to see what kind of table it is. also if i were you id join a full table so the blinds come around less often.

Re: Took a shot at 10/20 short, got feelings hurt
6-max 10/20 is a high variance game (much semibluffing, bluffing, marginal calldowns etc.) so if you take a shot you should put your "stop loss"-limit at more than 23BBs for the shot to make any sense.

Re: Took a shot at 10/20 short, got feelings hurt
If you are taking a shot with less than 200BB then you are just asking for trouble like this.
Set aside however much money you are taking your shot with, and keep playing until you either lose it all or feel like you can't beat the game. If one 20BB downswing is going to scare you though, then maybe you should rebuilt your confidence first and then step back and take the shot. |
Re: Took a shot at 10/20 short, got feelings hurt
Losing 20bb+ in under 100 hands is normal at 6-max. Enjoy.

Re: Took a shot at 10/20 short, got feelings hurt
exactly what limit were you jumping up from? if you can find an 8/16 game, i would try that first. If not, i would simply go in to 10/20 that the play will be much different from low limit HE.

23 BBs is nothing, 60 hands is even less.

Honestly man, while while this may be a lot of money for you to lose it is pretty common in the game. I'd say something like this happens fairly often to me.

[ QUOTE ] If you are taking a shot with less than 200BB then you are just asking for trouble like this. [/ QUOTE ] this is wrong [/ QUOTE ] Ok, let me rephrase. If you are taking a shot, then you should play a certain number of hands or have a stop loss number which is the maximum you will lose. I picked 200, but it can certainly be less. Certainly, you are not going to learn anything about your ability to play cards at a new level in 60 hands. I mean I've sat at really tough 5/10 tables, but that doesn't mean that all 5/10 tables are nearly as difficult. |
Re: Took a shot at 10/20 short, got feelings hurt
Sorry for the experience you had, it is normal though.
If this 60 hand spurt has demoralized you, you are not ready for 10-20. Not 10-20 in terms of how much money you can win or lose, but you are not fully grasping poker to be playing on this level. You'll lose much more in the long run. |
Re: Took a shot at 10/20 short, got feelings hurt
PokerRoom doesn't have 6-max (it's 5-max.)
What are you smoking? |
Re: Took a shot at 10/20 short, got feelings hurt
Pokerroom is not the place to take shots, from what I hear 10/20 will be much much softer on Party or Prima.

Re: Took a shot at 10/20 short, got feelings hurt
If losing 23 BB's seems awful to you then you should not be playing at that level.
If you feel like there is something very obviously wrong going on just because you lost 23 BB's then you don't understand poker and most certainly don't understand short-handed. It is my opinion that you aren't even close to ready for 10/20...and that it's very possible you shouldn't be playing 5/10 either (since a 50BB downswing there would be quite likely also...and would be the same $$ as a 25BB slump at 10/20) |
Re: Took a shot at 10/20 short, got feelings hurt
Perhaps there is some hidden jest here that I am too stupid to comprehend, but 23 big bets short-handed?! I wish my swings were as sweet as that. Try 200 big bets. I'm not trying to be cruel or anything, but this happens (almost) on a daily basis.
