500k seat - play, or unregister

I'm a good MTT player but not to the level of the big name posters in MTT

My roll is approx 2.5k. Lately I have taken to playing the 11r turbo sats to the 500k on stars because they are relatively soft and good for getting tourney dollars.

Should I continue doing this, or at any point should I consider, well, entering a 500k? I'd like some input please. I am about as 50/50 on the issue as possible.

i'd unregister. it is a lot of your bankroll and is a huge variance tourney.
maybe play a $200 one instead.

Are you sure you are not tlaking about the 500k? The 500k is the one this week.

Sorry, yes, 500k. My apoligies. The 215 tourney.

I would def. play this. I made my bankroll taking shots like this.

Word. Same for me pretty much. As long as its not a big hit to your bankroll or anything, this tournament is definitely worth it.

Well I know that everytime I havent unregistered and played in the high-buyin tourney i qualified for i ended up playing scared, losing and wanting to vomit afterward. Because the fact is that that 500 or 600 bucks is a big part of my roll.

So after a couple of courageous attempts I have just decided to take the tourney dollars. If my roll grows large enough that the buyin isnt a factor in my play then I will play, otherwise it doesnt work for me.

Re: 700k seat - play, or unregister

Actually about 1/13.5. I have played a MTT with much, much less. If you are confident in your playing ability, don't hold back. Go for it.

I'm more than confident in my playing abilities. It's a question of can I afford to risk 1/13 of my bankroll on some a juicy tournament.

agreed on taking the shot. i qualified for a friday special with a roll of 3k and won 8k that night.

Re: 500k seat - play, or unregister

Yup. I had a 3k roll and FTed a Party 200k for 11k. The rest is history.

Re: 500k seat - play, or unregister

Clayton...

I know I'm not nearly the caliber of MTT players that many on here are, but one thing about this is clearly evident to me.

If you are asking for other opinions on this matter, then I would not play. You may have the confidence in your game, but the simple fact that you alone are not sure leads me to believe that in this type of situation you may not actually play your best game due to the factors of you being unsure as to whether this is the best thing for you.

Personally, I wouldn't do it unless I was 100% sure about it, but you have to make your own decisions and you know your game and what your bankroll can handle more than anyone else here.

Im not a bankroll expert, but I think sometimes you have to take risks like this just to get it out of your head. I know its not brilliant logic, but it is clearly bugging you, probably meaning that you want to play. Since it is not a massive amount of your roll and you can recover, I would play. Worst thing that happens is you get outplayed and lose, then dont take another risk like this again.

Re: 500k seat - play, or unregister

I sympathize with Gomez and Time's thoughts at the moment.

Really, the issue is not whether or not I can play or whether or not I have the confidence.

The issue at hand is risk management. ~2.5k is more than enough for college freshman year. I mean, it's not even close. At the same time though, it's not like $215 is pissant spare change.

Re: 500k seat - play, or unregister

Well, if you can keep kicking those soft satellite tourneys for these seats (T$, whatever) - then why not just take a shot and only play when you get in cheap?

exactly.

Re: 500k seat - play, or unregister

Don't play. It's too much of a crapshoot for it to be worthwhile in taking a shot. I used to do it, but it wasn't worth it when looking back. If you want to take shots, I suggest a 100+9 or 150+12 on stars. Or a Party super. The stars 100 and 150 aren't going to make you rich over night like the big sunday tournament, but you have a much more realistic chance of making the final table and taking down a nice score.

Move up to 20+2 sngs. You're losing money by playing under your roll because the 20s are not that much more difficult than the 10s.

This really isn't a part of the issue, but I see where you're coming from. Fact is, poker is going to be almost cut off completely when college starts in 3 weeks.

Re: 500k seat - play, or unregister

Seriously, right now I'm thinking fck it, because the money I have right now is more than enough for freshman year, and what the hell, why not take a crapshoot at a huge score.

i'm sure in 30 minutes i'm going to start thinking more like carl. this is insanity.

Re: 500k seat - play, or unregister

1. play it as a shot.
2. i hate people who are giant pussies who cant make decisions for themselves. youll never become a truly good player asking everyone everything, run your own life, make some mistakes, repeat. this reeks of that flaw.

Gomez22 07-23-2005 10:04 PM

Re: 500k seat - play, or unregister

Maybe not good advice, but if I were in your situation (and I can only talk about what I would do here, because you may be a much better MTT player than me) I would personally probably take the T$ and play:

A) 10 20/2 SNGs
B) 6 30/3 SNGs
C) 20 10/1 MTTs
D 10 20/2 MTTs

or any combination of the above.

Personally, I would think this would give me a better chance of maximizing my profits without risking the full amount of my winnings on 1 tournament, and if I were to play well enough to make a FT of a 10 or 20 MTT, then I am far better off (in my mind) than taking the risk in a larger MTT where my edge may not be as great.

Like I said....... just what I would do.

point taken, but I'm trying to take action so I don't go into making this decision like a chicken with his head cut off. Likely have gone too far with that, though.

Unregister now, that way you can re-register once you make a clear decision.

Is this "Satellite Winner's Remorse"

I, personally, would take a shot. Reason being that I'm still a student living at home, I don't have many expenses and I play poker as a hobby. That's just me though, you have to go with whatever you feel more comfortable with.

Re: 500k seat - play, or unregister

I am in the same boat you are...although i qualify at the $3 rebuys. I have yet to play the 500K yet simply due to the fact that my baby needs diapers, toys etc, which I would rather use the $$ on right now. BUT that said I have made a promise to myself and the family that if I win TWO seats in a given week I will play one of the seats, for the experience. My game is likely not up to the level of this tourney (500K) but I would like to see how I do.

Let me know what you decide to do, curious as to your final decision making.

ClaytonN 07-23-2005 11:49 PM

Re: 500k seat - play, or unregister

I'm still registered at the moment. It might come down to how I feel the afternoon of the tournament. At the moment I'm leaning more towards playing, citing diminishing marginal utility of my own net worth.

Per your remark on how the fields are, they are loaded with people from satellites, so the fields are significantly weaker than the $109 rebuys, the $162's, etc etc.

Very True. I have played this tournament 20 times probably, and I cant remember ever having a "hard" first table. The donkeyness in this is significantly higher than in some other high buy in tournaments, like the 100 or 50 rebuy, and the random 100s and 150s. If its your skill that is in question, it shouldn't be. Play if you feel comfortable in a 200 dollar tournament and if you think you can play your best.

Re: 500k seat - play, or unregister

Going on a tangent, I've played in two 215 tournaments previously. I got knocked out of the first one overplaying TT vs. QQ on a ragged flop, and the second one getting my stack crippled at the end of the first hour with KJ vs. KQ vs. AK on a KTx flop unraised preflop. And then getting raped with KTo versus sdouble's AA preflop. But both of these were a while ago.
