I am losing money in the blinds

In trying to clear the Party bonus I had a rough day yesterday. When I reviewed Poker Tracker stats the entire loss came in the blinds with the the big blind loss four times larger than the small blind loss.

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what this means. Do you mean you fold your blinds so often that your BB and SB totals finish in the negative? Do you get involved with your BB and SB hands and lose with them? Defend too much? Please elaborate..

Re: I am losing money in the blinds

When I look at the position stats on Poker Tracker every position was positive except for the big blind where I lost $145 and the small blind where I lost $34.

4 off the button was a minus $48 with a net loss of $133. Of course some of the other postions offset these losses.

I do not know what I am doing wrong, but I have to fix it.

Under position stats, are you talking about the "Net Amount" column or the "Diff w/o Blind" column? If you are talking about the first, then that is completely normal. Everyone loses money when you include the actual blind. If you are talking about the second then yes you have some big big holes to fix.

Re: I am losing money in the blinds

The difference w/o stats are minus 90.89 for the BB and minus 25.42 for the small blind. For the month to date it is minus $25 in the BB and minus $198 in the SB.

This is just a two day sample, but I am doing something wrong that did not occur in the past.

In a 34K hand sample since the first of the year I am plus $676 in the BB and plus $128 in the SB.

Thanks for the replies. I think that I have to tighten up considerably on my SB play. That appears to be the big leak.

The BB loss appears to be just bad luck. I sustained big losses on KK pockets, had straights and trips lose to flushes, and flushes to boats on the river.

Completely off-topic, but how funny would it be if they had their own t-shirts?

<---- sample size nazi (still waiting on my shirt)

2 days worth of small blinds isn't going to be a big number of hands. Take a look at the actual hands that lost you money here, but most likely this is variance.

Re: I am losing money in the blinds

and did you check your poker tracker stats to see if you were dealt any good hands in the blinds and lost a big hand or two with them?

Or, have you just been defending with junk.

I love pt, because all that info is available to you if you look.

Re: I am losing money in the blinds

Your sample size is too small.

It is possible that you have large leaks in the way you play the blinds. It is possible that you were playing well and were simply unlucky. You probably don't have enough data from the past two days to distinguish these possibilities.

There might be enough data from the 34k hands. Ignore the absolute amounts. How many BB/100 are you winning or losing from the blinds?

If you're losing money in the blinds (not counting the blinds themselves), then you are probably playing too loose from there.

I've always said that this was a general leak but nobody seems to agree. Completing the SB with crap and calling a minraise on the BB for "odds" will just get you into trouble. I don't know if you're doing either or both of those things, but always keep in mind that the blinds are the worst positions in the game. And defending a blind in a 100BB game is "generally" a waste.

Picture a baseball batter who's offered 4 strikes instead of 3 to try and hit a homerun from 150 yards behind the plate... You get the idea

Re: I am losing money in the blinds

Just thought of another thing.

A major leak I had was that I often got free hands from the big blind and I would hit something that looked good on the flop (woohoo BB special). I would then proceed to go way too far with what actually was a crappy hand and I would get suckered into donation sprees.

An example comes to mind :

I'm in the BB holding 58 and the flop comes 58T (3 players).
Turn : 7
Had I not bet my hand on the flop and turn (with the worst position of us 3), I would've been able to let go quite easily, but since I was convinced this was such a nice hit for a "free hand", I proceeded to call a double all-in from TT and J9. I still can't believe it, but that's the kind of thing I found out in my PT database when I observed my blinds stats were crappy.

In meta considerations, this also adds to tilt and what not.
