I've always liked the three "B"'s - Brains, Balls, and Bankroll - you get to pick the order. Devine spiritual calmess and a refusal to tilt helps too.

The ability not to tilt is number 3 4 and 5.

If you think you are untiltable, you either haven't played long enough or haven't played high enough. I used to think I never tilted. Now I imagine tilt costs me at least 1 bb/100. I'm waiting till it's about half that before I start to play for really high stakes.

internet connection is a must.

but seriously, bankroll, patience, discipline (avoiding tilt), table selection, and a solid understanding of the game. also you need to constantly be learning/improving. pokertracker, rakeback and bonus whoring are a plus. to limit the skills to just 5 does not do it justice. pretty much already been said, but can't really think of anything new and profound.

- Think you're a good player, even though you're not.
- Type "nh" in the chat box after every hand.
- Type in the chat box about "pot odds" and yell and berate people when they call your TPTK with a flush draw.
- Type "who's got the boat, haw haw" anytime the board pairs
- Post an frustrating bad beat on 2+2
- Go complain on RGP about how 2+2 is full of mean dicks.

Top 5 Things Needed to be a Successful Internet Player

This is the definitive list. Do not give this to anyone else as we dont want to improve their internet poker...

1. Be able to bluff. Set a small mirror in front of your mouse and stare at your hand for hours watching for any type of tells as you click the button. This takes weeks to master.
2. Make sure the "show hand strength" box is clicked on. God forbid you think you have ace high when youve actually got a royal tomato.
3. Regardless of the texture of the hand youre playing, announce "Oldest trick in the book" to the table after every hand you win. This inspires more action on your hands...
4. And this is very important...choosing the ideal screenname. Make sure its something that will draw attention to you; or make you appear weak. i.e. "WhatsWild" or "ThisIsSimilarToUno" or if youre on Party, "PPSvcTech". Only use this last one if you tell all the players at your table you are testing this site and will reimburse any money you take off of them at midnight tonight.
5. This ones obvious--A good pair of sunglasses.

Assuming Party rakes $5 on each hand and the game is always 10 handed, something like 0.0625 BB/100.

It doesnt matter that a higher stakes player's rakeback is a lower percentage of his total winnings or his total bankroll. Money is money and a higher stakes player will earn more money in rakeback than a lower stakes player so to say a higher stakes players rakeback is negligible is just dumb.

Re: Top 5 Things Needed to be a Successful Internet Player

you can be an excellent poker-player with a good bankroll....but if you don't have patience and discipline you stand a very good chance of going broke at some point.

OTOH - a mediocre player like myself with a so-so bankroll (by my standards anyway) can still make it with enough patience/discipline (and I think I am sorely lacking in the patience/discipline department....but compared to most people I'm probably much better than average)

I would list patience and discipline as number 1.
Sufficient bankroll as number 2.
Ability to actually play the cards well as number 3.

BRAVO to MicroBob and AutoBet for being the only ones
in this thread to get "discipline" right!

In all seriousness...it is soooo easy to get caught up in gambling with
weaker opposition. The problem is you are not as lucky as they are
and will not win with K5 on the river. It is also tiring to take rapid
successions of bad beats online, whereas in live play they happen
more slowly and spaced out

Re: Top 5 Things Needed to be a Successful Internet Player

The most important concept for solid earnings year in year out is this- know yourself and objectively assess your skill/talent to your opponents.

Playing professionally foremost is about staying in the game ie not busting.

You need to understand your own limits-ie risk tolerance, tilt tolerance,multi-tabling tolerance. All these tasks need to be gauged via the skill level of your opponents.

Many players play too high too fast with too small a bankroll and end up getting buffeted by swings they usually cant handle.

Bottomline for me is making enough money to support my lifestyle in a fashion that doesnt make me a zombie.

Top5

-Discipline/Heart-taking beats/long losing streaks in stride
-Game Selection
-Work ethic-putting in hours
-Focus/Ability to Multitask easily
-Smarts/Street Smarts ie not just basic poker theory, hand reading/ but you need to be a good gambler- by that I mean you can stray succesfully from conventional wisedom.. specifically as you move up and play more varied games ie HU LHE or any bigbet games ie NLHE.
