pokerstarsblog sez they "chatted genially". I played a couple events where MM was at adjacent tables. He was talking nonstop of course, but seemed self-deprecating and relaxed.

One could speculate the looming court case-incarceration contributed to his odd-idiotic play & behavior last year. MM has won a NLHE bracelet; barring a complete meltdown look for a top five finish at worst.

What did Arieh say to Williams after he was eliminated last year? I watched a webcast and haven't seen the replays until recently and they censored it out. Apparently it was something to do with Raymer...I just can't remember what it was.

something along the lines of "bust this s.o.b."

I think a lot of Arieh's trash talk was just to get players to doubt their own game. Like when the British player (can't remember his name) called arieh all in with AJo, and Arieh hit his draw, and then criticized the guy. It was like he was trying to emulate the table image that he always/only had good cards. i can see that working...just not at the final table of the WSOP...

Arieh is a punk, in the same mold as Paul Phillips.. Arrogant, egotistical, and no respect for the game.

Atleast Hellmuth (everybody's favorite punching bag) and Matusow have a sense of humor.

the reason arieh said this to williams was to fire him up a bit, williams had been playing to progress up the payscale for some time, and arieh was worried he wouldnt really try heads up. obviously what he said had no effect, as williams settled for second pretty quickly.

as for demetriou, what you said is true, its just an image that he tries to give out at the table, nothing more than that, raymer and demetriou have said as much

I always thought the comments by Mike in last years WSOP were so overblown... When he made them it was nothing personal against raymer, they were battleing for table control and mike was trying to intimidate and rile him up... that backfired obviously as Raymer showed he wouldn't back down and pushed on a heavy draw... Mike made a bad call and the rest is history.

Sure is he a cocky prick sometimes but there is always an added amount of playful humor in there, not straightforward berrating that arieh was dishing out.

Greg saw it on the TV broadcast and according to old threads I believe Greg indicated that he didn't take what Josh said personally and considers him a decent guy with ESPN assigning him the roll of the bad guy.

Matusow is a great NL tournament player, he's funny, and he's very entertaining to watch. I really get the impression that he occasionally can't help himself from speaking without thinking first, in the heat of competition - but for the most part he seems like a good guy.

Matusow, Raymer, and Ivey as the Final 3 would be almost too much for a poker fan to hope for.

Paul wore a freaking Phil Hellmuth jersey and used a Phil Hellmuth chip cover for their heads up match... I'd say he has a pretty good sense of humor. Sure he has a big ego, but he doesn't belittle the play of others like Arieh does. "He calls $500,000 with a pair of fives, what a joke! Waaaah waaaah wahhhhhh waaaaaahhhh!!!! Someone get me a tampon!"

I don't buy that. While I'm sure ESPN goes out of its way to highlight confrontations, Arieh said what he said and acted how he acted througout the main event. They didn't dub that in. And while he may be a great guy in real life, his own behavior, not ESPN, convinced a lot of us that he can be a real ass.

At least he's not as big a jerk as Assfandiari.

I dunno, being a jerk 1% of the time is human; I would be upset if I was forced to put all my chips in as a 43% dog in the final few tables at the WSOP because the guy on my right played a hand badly. I mean, the only thing Demetriou was ahead of in Josh Arieh's entire range of hands was the hand he had.

Not all of us are gentlemen virtually all the time like Fossilman.

Gimme a break. Do you think Arieh was only playing AA-QQ, AK-AQ? Josh plays extremely aggressively and pushes a lot of draws. Demtetriou called him on it, Josh got lucky, and he still acted like a jerk.

There's a huge difference between losing your cool every now and then and taunting an opponent mercilessly after hitting your draw. There's a huge difference between saying "C'mon bust this guy!" and "Bust this motherfucker!"

I'm no prince, but I have never acted like that at a poker table. Ever.

If someone posted here that they had acted like that in a poker room, he'd be flamed so badly he'd probably never want to post here again. Yet, people rush to the defense of these guys just because...what? They're on TV?

I'm sure some of you have met the guy and I'm sure he was nice to you. Big deal. I think our true character, or lack of it, comes out when we're under pressure. Some people can handle it with class and some can't. Arieh is obviously an example of the latter.

The way Demitriou handled it was perfect. Obviously he was steaming, but he was calm and made Arieh look even worse.

Of course not. But he doesn't lead the other hands he was playing into that board into two opponents, especially when one of them is Demetriou.

Say he had a small pp. Do *you* lead 99 into 2 opponents on an AKQ board? What about A7, where he's way ahead/way behind?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Mike clamp down on his chatter as things move along and the pressure builds, unless he builds a much bigger lead early on. Can you imagine blowing your lead here?

I also feel that Mike may be prone to tilt, so if one big, bad suckout happens he might implode.

But that is a guess.

I have no hate in me for Mike, and I consider him to be a very talented poker player. I do believe that many of his comments are WAY too negative and often come across as mean-spirited, whether he means them that way or not. Of course, if you're saying mean things, I think that is a bad thing, whether it is a cold and calculated tactic to put somebody on tilt and get their chips, or if you're saying it because you really mean it.

And Mike can be very funny as well, as long as he's not going too far. One funny thing he said during the conversation in the picture, was that if he and I get heads-up we should hold ESPN for ransom. Tell them to give us 10M each or we won't play it out.

That could probably almost work. It would have to be a wet dream for the ESPN execs if it were to happen.

I think his comment to you during last year's ME was totally out of line, assuming I heard it right of course. And it says quite a bit about your character that you are able to put that behind you and allow yourself to be friendly with him. I can't honestly say I was a huge fan after watching last year's final table, but everything you've done since then has pretty much won me over (along with your play in this year's event [img]/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img] )

fwiw, I agree with your assessment on Matusow. Decent guy, big mouth that gets him in trouble sometimes. Every poker room has at least one.
