Adding another monitor to a laptop

I tried posting this in the computer technical help forum, but didnt get much of a response. I am looking into buying a monitor to add to my laptop, is there any way you can tell what the max resolution will be on the second monitor before buying it? My max resolution on my laptop is 1680 by 1050. Thanks.

On the monitor box there will be a max resolution label...or if u buy online it should tell you..it's not like some sick twisted guessing game.

It's up to the new monitor, the video card/driver on your laptop, and your OS. Your current laptop resolution pretty much tells me that it is new enough that it will all be on the monitor you buy.

He's right. Also, typically it's limited by the amount of memory on your laptop's video card. Anything over 32 megs and you're good with just about any external monitor you buy. If you post the make/model of your laptop or your laptop's video card stats I could give you a more definite answer.

While we're on the subject, I've got an Inspiron 9300 and 2 2001 FP's that are currently still packed, awaiting my move.

Can I simply plug them both in (one through DVI, one through S-video out) at the same time and have them work, or am I limited to the 9300 screen + 1 2001FP? If it's the latter I'll just buy a cheap desktop.

Dual monitor functionality is part of the video card. Bring up your display properties, then click on the Settings tab. If you don't see two monitors there, or if there aren't two choices in a Display: dropdown you only have a single.

In that case, plugging a monitor into your laptop will get you exactly the same content that is on the laptop display -- NOT a second one.

I have the Radeon X300 card, which has multiple monitor support. I just don't know if I can use the 2 different video inputs on the back of the laptop at the same time.

I don't know, but I don't think Windows will display the option on the settings unless you have all the monitors you want plugged in.

This this suggests you should be able to. Probably plug one into the vga, one into the dvi.

With multi-monitor display capability, you can increase your productivity by up to 50% by extending your desktop workspace across two monitors.

Of course you know the proper answer to you question is plug them in and see what happens.

Hmm...I have to do things like plug stuff in for my brother the attorney.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 with an NVIDIA Geforce FX Go5200 with 64 mb of memory. I just want to make sure my laptop can handle a 2001FP before buying.

Re: Adding another monitor to a laptop

This is something that I've been looking into because I want to 12-table with a laptop also.

Definitely plug them both in and see---- but I would bet that it won't work. The video card has "multi-monitor" display support--- but most likely only your laptop display an one external display.

This is what I've been looking at trying, in order to 12-table with a laptop:
http://www.villagetronic.com/e_pr_vtbook.html
It's a video card that plugs into one of your PCslots. Supports one additional monitor at 1600x1200 resolution.

So you could have one Dell plugged into the back of your notebook, one plugged into this VTbook thing, and have your laptop display.

You can buy it here:

$224

I don't wanna unpack them and then have to repack them equally well a week from now, though I'm lazy.

If that card is 225 everywhere I think it makes more sense to spend another 75 bucks and just buy/build a cheap second machine. Let me see if I can find it elsewhere.

Re: Adding another monitor to a laptop

You don't even know if it will work or not yet?

However, when you want 4 monitors you're probably going to need a desktop anyway.

(If I had to bet, I'd go with the third screen on the laptop not working and the two plugs being for one or the other, but not both.)

Where are you moving from/to?

Re: Adding another monitor to a laptop

Yeah, I'm gonna get a second or third computer soon anyway, I'm just wondering whether to get it now or in a month. No hurry.

The move's from Brooklyn to Queens but I have a roommate who's going out there from Long Island and bringing all the furniture, plus my GF from Michigan...so coordinating is a pain. Let's say the tourney win came at a good time for my mental state

I'm seriously considering purchasing a monitor with the current deal that dell has. Does anyone think this is a bad time to purchase one? It seems like everything with party will turn out ok and I just dont want to lose the deal dell has right now. Any opinions?

Re: Adding another monitor to a laptop

Just go to www.newegg.com

Prolly find a better quality monitor there for equal price.

Seriously Newegg is where half the nerds shop.
