How many of us played magic before moving to poker?

Going through the Where You Are Now post, it seems like a lot of us played magic before moving to poker. Let's see some numbers.

I played type 2 tournies in MA for like 3 years. I quit when ravager took over because I got sick of losing to it.

I played MTG from about 1996 to 2000. Some MTG skills do translate to poker. I just wish I'd discovered poker before I discovered MTG.

Played for a few years... Someday I'll make as much at poker as I spent buying cards

You know your poll is going to be biased in favor of those who have played magic before right?

I was actually a retailer for M:TG for a while, and sold the cards at flea markets, etc. Playing with kids that would come and buy cards from me. I was in the Guru program and all that. More along the judge-track then the tournament winner track.

I never made it to a tournament.. never went the extra mile to buy rares that would make my deck powerful enough for a tournament.

That was back around Stronghold days. I have some Mercardian Masques cards, and the expansion after that, but it was a long time ago.

Started during Mirage. I played mostly till plainshift. I started back up a little later and played during Scourge to moridian. I just realized a 9th edition just came out. I might build a deck to pwn some n00bs for fun O_o

Magic definitely has things that translates to poker, especially in the trap setting part of the game. However, the redundency of magic doesn't compare to the joys of poker.

I have more fun drafting magical cards than playing poker. Poker pays much better though, so I don't play much magical cards.

Played for a summer during highschool. Not hardcore(tournaments) or anything although we did have strategy discussion and deck building sessions once in a while...looking back that was a really lame summer

Yeah, David Williams is a Magic guy. Efro too. That really annoying "daaaaah!" guy. Quite a few others that I can't recall off the top of my head.

...I did speculating on cards. I made a killing on Arabian Nights.

I started in Alpha and played until the set after Nights. Whatever that was.

Re: How many of us played magic before moving to poker?

I was one of the best M:TG Type 2 tournament players in Maryland. Played from 1995 to 2002. Was a level 1 Judge, and ran a ~30 person tournament every Sunday at a local mall. I didn't just copy other peoples decks... I was fairly skilled at building my own. I quit Magic in 2002 when I came in 9th at the Maryland championships, when the top 8 moved on to the finals. I play tested this deck design for hours upon hours in live play and online. I spent over 100 bucks buying the cards to complete it.

Alas, in the 3rd game tiebreak in the final Swiss match, this cheezy red deck fired off an Earthquake, killing us both at the same time, for the draw. I overextended myself, and would have killed him in a turn or two. He had no cards in his hand, but topdecked that earthquake.

Anyways, that was my M:TG swan song.

Though he won't admit it, s0ma and I played M:TG back during 6th Edition in a small shop in Miami.

Fun times, tho my folks gave me hell about buying cards.

I asked my wife if she would join a bridge club with me and my nephew started laughing at me, saying something about 'bridge is for old people'.

I said, boldly, 'nuh-unh!' and went to look for a bridge club.

They meet Thursday mornings at 10am at a nearby church.

Umm, ok.

I played Magic for a few years during high school mostly. Started around 4th edition and kept up til Stronghold or so. I have my cards / non standard decks around here somewhere. Never played the tournaments or anything just with my friends but I think I was pretty damn good :P

Re: How many of us played magic before moving to poker?

While I realize this poll is skewed towards the Magic players, I'm nonetheless impressed with how many there are.

I played way back in the day shortly after Revised was released, and I quit a couple years later. I was never serious at all. I picked it up again shortly after the open beta of Magic Online started. I got much more serious with it then, although I never played cardboard again. However, after the thing went live, I was increasingly faced with the cruel reality that I sucked, or at the very least I didn't have what it took to break even based on play alone. I was able to support the habit based on aggressive trading, which, really, is probably more profitable than playing for all but the very best players. I kept playing for a couple more years, but the degree of my sucking kept increasing. About that time, I found poker, I sold my collection, and I never looked back.

Played it in middle school when it was still a budding game(if anyone remembers Chronicles, thats when I started)

Played it a little more at the beginning of High-School.

Played on the semi-professional level(meaning my "Team" won enough money to sustain ourselves in the hobby) for 3-4 years up to and including some of the time I found poker.

I'm sure if you, or most anyone here got ahold of Zvi Moshowitz's articles on Magic theory there would be an influx of very fine players.

But the fact remains that, unless you have a sponsor, Magic:The Gathering is a -EV game for all but approx. the top 15% of players in the game. And when I say Top 15%, I mean in the world.

sounds sort of like poker...

yes, the poll is skewed towards magic players, but then again the point of the post was to see how many were out there. I think it succeeded in that.
