I\'m moving down (LC)

Well....I just had my 1st 10 buyin downswing. Combination of bad beats tilt and shittty play. This feels really really horrible I'll see u guys again later. I think my roll is down to $1700 or so after today. I started playing weak tight as hell today and then lost about $500 more on bad beats. (overpair catching a set to beat my set, runner runner AK bluff to beat my 2 pair, donk pushing 66 and beating my AA, etc etc...) then I lost $200 with QQ to an obvious set 'cause I tilted.

In my year of gambling online this is by far the worst I've felt, but its not healthy for me to stay at 200NL right now.

I am nto sure why I am posting this but I guess there isin't really anyone I know that I feel like telling this to.

Based on the content of your posts and analysis, I suspect that you were probably a very small winner to break-evenish in the 200 NL game.

In this situation you are often going to have seemingly insane swings.

Take a week or two off and hit the 100 game with a fury and focus.

Send me a PM if you wanna talk.

Good luck man. I've been through that a number of times now. You'll get better at it. Good job moving down before you end up at a 10/20 table with your whole BR in play

I was there last week.. tilted/badbeated off 75% of my online BR down to like 700$, then it turned around and I've since more than doubled it again... had to take a little break and move down a bit though.

Work your bankroll back up to at least 4k, and re-evaluate your play before you move back up.

I've never moved down but then I make sure my bankroll is 40xBB before moving up - I think there are two routes to bankroll management - the 'take a shot' school where you have to be prepared to move down or get busted if you overreach or get unlucky (but if things go well you move up much faster and make more money)and the 'tortoise' school that is ultra-cautious about only moving up when they are SURE they are ready.

I'm very much a tortoise (I figure there is no rush) and I get the feeling I'm in the minority from most of the stuff posted here.

I don't know what your playing habits are but for me the best thing when i run bad is to take some time off. When i run bad i eventually start to play bad and then even when the cards even out i continue to play bad and results continue to suffer.

So i take some time off and when i come back i'm usually able to play my A-game again

Re: I\'m moving down (LC)

Dropping a level after a huge down swing shows good judgment, many who don't have the discipline to do so will blow their whole roll.

There's no shame in this whatsoever, and most have had to do this at one time or another.
The 200 games will be waiting for you when you're ready to move back up.

Do you play Short Handed or Full ring? Variance is through the roof with SH play, compared with a full ring TA style play.

In two years of online play, I've dropped maybe 5-6 buy-ins a couple times playing full ring, but when I play short handed this is almost a routine occurrence.

man dont worry about it, every poker player suffers from at least one swing where they think they cant do ANYTHING right

my bankroll was once at $15000

what is it now? oh, $6000

i tilt, i play bad when i run bad, and it just all goes downhill for me. ive made a little vow to myself to 5-6 table 200 NL grind for the next few months until i get back to at least that $15000

it sucks real hard, knowing that if i had the roll/patience, i could definitely crush the 400 nl game

but right now i just gotta get that roll back

so keep truckin man

Re: I\'m moving down (LC)

Good judgement in knowing when to move back down. Go kill the 100NL game for awhile to rebuild your confidence. If you multitable I don't think there is anything wrong with throwing in a 200NL table or 2 with a BR of considerably less than the recommended 4k. But just concentrate on killing the 100NL solely for awhile. Confidence is key in poker, get that back no matter what level. best of luck.

Ojo_Rojo 12-09-2005 07:49 AM

Re: I\'m moving down (LC)

Good luck PokerJoker - I'm currently in 100NL - 200NL limbo, where I can maintain an ok winrate at 100NL, but as soon as I go up, my downswing "re-emerges" and I drop 5 buyins. That hurts.

A lesser poker player than ourselves would go broke in half the time with the beats I've taken.

I can only keep trying, then, just maybe, I can consolidate my place at the 200NL tables and I'll see you there. Here's to 2006.

I always for pot preflop. And yeah i should definitly fold flop. Also, I often check a flop like this, but at this point i felt i had been chechking too many and there was a good chance i could take down this healthy pot.

yeah, i was planning on doing something on the turn instead, should have gotten more in on the flop tho, it being so draw heavy and all, river is a clear cut fold too.

Poker Joker,

It seems like a lot of people are advocating playing 4-6 tables on an autopilot mode to build your bankroll back up. While I'm not knocking that, I know when I'm on a bad swing it really helps to concentrate on 1 or 2 tables, practice hand reading skills, really take the time to think about the hands. It makes me realize that I do like poker and it's fun, but not always fun when you've got 6 tables flashing in your face every 5 seconds. Just a thought.

Good luck.

My situation similair, I'm down $1,700 my first week as a pro, was $3000 for a few days. In a lot of ways I wish I was four tabling $200NL instead of focusing on this one $600NL. Stupid party skins breaking up.

Re: I\'m moving down (LC)

Why do you care that people care.

Variance is a hard thing to deal with, and it makes people tilt. Knowing other experience similair downswings helps.

Also, there is no variance measure stickied for NL. I know what constitutes a big downswing for limit or SnGs, but not NL. At my low point I was down 6 buy-ins my first week after quiting my job and going pro. That isn't easy to swallow. If I didn't realize it wasn't so uncommon it would have really got to me.

Re: I\'m moving down (LC)

If you went pro without a clear idea of what sorts of swings to expect, you made an egregious error. There is no content in this thread pertaining to the forum; its just an excuse for people to complain about how bad they've run. I expect better from mid-stakes players.

I don't mind this stuff being posted. It keeps things in perspective for me. Strategy posts argue long and hard about tiny EV decisions but those are made completely irrelevent by one tilt session or time spent playing the wrong limit (too high or too low). I'm wondering if these issues are what the game is really about.

Run of the mill variance posts don't have much value but the moving limits stuff can be. Anyway, I think it's useful for posters to have some general threads to say any random stuff that they need to be say.

i have gone through similar swings in 200 in begining. i found out that your post game is the cause of 95% of all this. playing KJ/AJ/SUITED connectors/1 gappers are the other 5%. my advice is to play with a bigger bankroll. u said u lost 10 buyins and then moved down. so u had about 18 buyins in 200nl to start with. all though thats technically fine. i suggest you play with a 50buyin + bankroll. you can play much more comfortably and optimally. thinking about the money sucks. also when i run bad in a game i switch to something else. then when i come back i find that i got much better. i personally switch between sngs/cash. i first reached 100nl in cash then switch to sngs and reached 55's then i went back to cash and reached 400nl, now im back in sngs hoping to reach the 215's. peeeeeez. bigger roll = more confidence.

I went pro with what was considerd an approriate bankroll for the level. I've been playing the game for months, but this is the first time I lost 6 buy ins. It probably wouldn't have bothered me if it wasn't the very first week I went pro, we'd all like to start on an upswing.

And as another person pointed out, if you have time to troll around thier thread then it really can't be bothering you too much.

I am surprised at the number of 200nl players who are going pro.
