Funny Sam Grizzle Story

"This is from the pokerstories.com forum as told by Todd Brunson."

"About 12 years ago I was playing in a 150-300 hold'em game. Early in the morning Sam Grizzle walks in and starts commenting on how good the game is. When asked why he's not playing he pulls out his bankroll ($2) and sarcastically asks how much the buy in is.

He leaves and after talking to Puggy Pearson comes back with $10,000 and starts to play. Now after about an hour Sam an Puggy get into an arguement ( about what I can't remember offhand ) and Puggy picks up his $10,000 and half of what Sam was winning, leaving Sam with about $400, far short of the required buy in. Fortunatlly for Sam, no one says anything and in about four hours Sam is winning around $40,000.

If this isn't amazing enough, Sam quits the game announcing how he's going to do us a big favor and go play the tournament, allowing us to keep what money we had left.( He also told us how smart he was and dumb we were of course ) You can guess what happened next; Sam the genius wins the tournament and another $120,000 to go with the $40,000 he won off us earlier that morning. Not bad for a guy who showed up at the casino with $2 in his pocket.

It's now 6 am and he's been in the commerce for exactly 24 hours, time to get some sleep. That would be if he were a normal human but Sam's far from that. Sam comes up to the top section where there's a tough $800-1600 razz game in progress. Sam stumbles over and bellies up to the table losing his whole $160,000 in a fairly short period of time.

Instead of becoming upset Sam simply told every one how dumb they were, shook his head and walked out of the casino with the exact same $2 he showed up with the day before. Just another day in the life of a Gambler."

the more i play and go to places with these so called "pros", the more i realize what degenerates many of these guys are.

everytime turning pro crosses my mind, a quick trip to vegas rights my thinking real quick.

Please.

I also agree with Vince's post.

If Ray Zee or Ed had posted exactly what Mr. Lepore said, there would have been 10 people agreeing and slobbering on his knob before he'd had chance to hit reply.

I agree that it is more of a sad story then a funny one. I think it is sad that a person with some talent for the game is doomed to be habitually broker because they can't control their own impulses.

I think it is sad that Sam had 160,000, which would have given him a nice bankroll to play any level up to 100/200 or 200/400 and blows it in one day.

I find it sad that Sam and other simaliar pros lack bankroll managmement skills and that this one flaw will keep most of them perpetually broke.

In a discussion with another 2+2'er, we both agreed that neither of us will ever be one of the household-name poker players, because we both abhor the idea of going broke.

I feel that just about all the top pros are willing to risk more than I am, and therefore reap greater rewards.

I feel less sympathy for folks I consider jerks. I've only seen him on TV, but it certainly looks as if Grizzle is a jerk.

As told in OP's post, he appeared to be acting like a jerk along the way here.

Those who know and like Grizzle (surely these folks exist) have better reason for thinking this is a sad story.

If you have a large amount of sympathy for Grizzle here, you probably shouldn't be playing poker.

Money you win comes from someone. The money Grizzle won came from people. Did he feel bad about taking it? Surely not. He taunted them about it. Why should I feel bad when he loses it?

Or go broke. There was an interesting thread in the WPT forum in which Daniel N. and Scotty N. were involved in a tournament. the particulars are not important. What I found interesting was that Daniel had put Scotty in the tournament. Why would a top tournament pro "Scotty" need someone to put him in a tournament? O.K. maybe he didn't need it, maybe there was a good reason other than money. I just can't think of one.

It happened in LA @ Commerce Casino last year. Ted Forrest & Tuan Le started talking about foot races at the table and Tuan said that he was very fast. Ted then comes up with a wager for 50k I believe that pitted Tuan v Sam in a fifty yard dash with Tuan giving Sam a 10 yard head start. Tuan hemmed and hawed and got Ted to knock it down to 5 I believe. So 45 yards vs 50 yards. It's at this point Ted crosses the casino to ask Sam if he'd like to run a 45 yard dash for 5 grand. Sam says sure and that's when Ted clues him into the actual details of the bet.

Short cut to the end of the story...Sam wins his 5k free-run and Ted Forrest makes 45k.

I think the moral of the story is - if Ted Forrest ever makes you an offer you think is too good to be true, it is.

i couldn't agree more. you wanna gamble with 5K in a tournament you should have 200K backing it up and understand you're taking a shot. or get a backer.
