What is a nit?

I've been seeing the term "nit" being used alot and I'm not sure what it means.

Re: What is a nit?

A nit is a person who picks at minor, often irrelavent details. Derived from "picking nits" or "nit-picking"

A nit in poker terms is a rather straight foward unimaginative player. Why they get a derrogatory nickname is beyond me as they usually go home with the money. They don't win large and usually don't lose large. That's are far as I interpret it

A tight passive. Usually ultra tight, to the point that it lowers thier EV. They fold to often, they aren't aggressive enough.

Nits are typically unfriendly, extremely selfish, know-it-all rocks who add little or nothing of value to the texture of a good game. They’ll sometimes be in disguise, wearing dark sunglasses and a hat. What the nit can’t hide is that serious-looking mug that rarely if ever turns into a smile.

Re: What is a nit?

Let's say you post

"I have AK, and the flop is AKK, so it checks to me and I raise, should I have tried slowplaying?"

A nit will respond

"You BET, you didn't raise"

Choosing to focus on some insignificant detail of symantics rather than the core question at hand.

Re: What is a nit?

I've always thought of a "nit" as someone who is a mediocre poker player but who thinks of himself as much more. Someone who knows the general ins and outs and thinks that makes him a great player who is worthy of dispensing advice to other players, especially following a bad beat, but the point is that they don't seem to understand that the advice they're doling out to make themsevles appear knowledgeable is common knowledge to most at the table.

Kind of like Plato's sophists...
