Did Johnny Chan 4-bet and fold to a 5-bet?

You know what I'm talking about. I'm confused.

Others may, I don't ... but this just happened to me the other night on Interpoker. Granted, could've been a misclick.

Re: Did Johnny Chan 4-bet and fold to a 5-bet?

Rounders. Mike details how he sat down to play 300/600 with JC. He plays tight folding a lot. Then JC raises (presumably preflop - although I guess it is not clear) and Mike decides to make a play at him with rags. Mike re-raises. Then JC "raises back, trying to bully the tourist" or something like that. So Mike "comes right back at him and re-raises". Then JC "says 'What do you have?'" or something like that. And then JC mucks. "I sat with the best. And I won." Mike boasts.

WTF? It had been a while since I saw Rounders and I completely forgot this scene somehow. Does it make any sense to anyone?

I've made this play at least once.

Although this doesn't answer my question (which was just looking for someone to confirm that I understood the action correctly in the movie), I'm sure it is an interesting story and would love it if you would provide the details. Also, are you implying that I am correct in the action and that you think the action makes sense because the circumstances in the movie hand are similar to the ones in the hand in which you did the same thing?

Re: Did Johnny Chan 4-bet and fold to a 5-bet?

You got the story right. 300/600 at the Taj. JC raises, Matt Damon reraises, JC 3-bets and Matt "hesitates for about 2 seconds" and 4-bets. Chan folds.

Interestingly enough Matt sat down at the table with 6k and managed to last an hour by mostly folding.

What's mostly confusing to me is did that action take place preflop?

Mike's coversation with Kanish sort of implies that it did which makes Chan's fold even more confusing.

Yes, this is my question and why I'm confused. On, say, the river, I might understand but preflop it just seems retarded.

You can see a flop in the scene. It looks like it's all broadway. Someone please kill me for knowing this.

It was $300/600 stud with a $1 ante and $50 bring in. Really weird structure.

All poker scenes from movies are simply ridiculous. Makes for good drama, but silly poker.

Re: Did Johnny Chan 4-bet and fold to a 5-bet?

yes, the fold is after the flop. I remember seeing the flop on the table but don't recall what the cards were.

Re: Did Johnny Chan 4-bet and fold to a 5-bet?

This reminds me of a hand I played vs. GoT once. Why was I playing GoT? I dunno, it was just something I had to do for myself. I needed to know that I could sit down across from the best in the world and hold my own. Anyway, I had 7-high, no draw. Complete rags. I bet as a bluff, he raised. I could see it in his eyes, he didn't have it. I 3-bet. He just calmly 4-bet. Right at that moment, I knew he was trying to bully me. And I also knew that it didn't matter what my cards were, I was just playing the man. So I did it. 5-bet him with complete rags. He took his time, played with his chips, then folded. He looked like he was about to ask me something, but he had had a few drinks and started puking on the table.

Johnny Chan actually 'acted' in the scene and was an advisor on the show. Why the [censored] would he make a ridiculous scene?

POTD, el D.

What really gets to me about this scene more than Chan's fold is how Knish says to Mike: (paraphrasing) "But you need fifty or sixty grand to sit down in that game". Why would Knish say he would need 100 BB to sit in a 300/600 game? Hollywood. Harumph.

Or more likely it was just the first big number the writers thought up.

No. 100 Big Bets makes you look like a pimp. I'm envious of the picture Barry has at Foxwoods with his Pyramid of Power and I will one day best it by sitting down with him at the 20 game and making his eyes bleed as I begin a'stackin' 40 racks o' white.

Nothing says "macho" more then saying "raise" and shoving in a whole rack -- and then giving the dealer a dirty look when he takes too long to give you your $20 change.

This reminds me of a hand I played vs. Tommy Angelo once. Why was I played T.A.? I dunno, we were in his hotel room and they asked me to bring up $1,400 in $1 chips. Anyway, I had 4-high on the river. The board was J-5-3-T-K no flush possible. It was head-up and I was first to act. I turned over my hand. 4-2. Tommy looked at my hand, looked at the board, looked at me, looked back at my hand and said:

"What do you do?"

You can see some cards on the board if you look closely.

White chips, WHITE CHIPS!!!

You will be forever banned from the FW's 20 game if you show up with ANY white chips.

And MaxPower can attest that I only bought in for 2 racks that day.

Re: Did Johnny Chan 4-bet and fold to a 5-bet?

C'mon, Barry, when I sit at the 20 I always have a handful of whites for tips - but just because it will offend you, I'll limit it to the few even though I was planning on doing the Raise Via A Rack trick (assuming I'm there when you are AND I'm not drinking - a highly unlikely combo).

Alas... I'll just have to best your chip pyramid the old fashioned way (and try not to get banned when I get evidence of it myself as some floor person is bound to go - no cell phones in the poker room, please go to the stairs, blah blah blah).
