Jarhead: Who else is excited?

I'm really excited for this movie, especially since I saw Donnie Darko for the first time last week. Besides that, I haven't seen any other Jake Ghyllenhal (sp?) movies, so I'm not totally sure what to expect. Is anyone as pumped about this as I am?

I am....but Jake Gyllenhall is not one of the reasons, i have no objections to him, but i don't think he's especially good either.

I predict this will be a terrible movie...but I may be biased, as I have a brother who was a special force marine, and I actually know marines, and I don't think Hollywood's going to do a very good job portraying them (especially with Jake Gyllanhof[sp?] as the lead). Wasn't Jakethebake a marine...what say you?

I'm not pumped up per se. But I am looking forward to it.

Re: Jarhead: Who else is excited?

any word on what type of bias this movie is going to have? the commercials dont make it very clear (which from an advertising standpoint is a good idea).

Re: Jarhead: Who else is excited?

Ex-Army, best friend with plenty of marines... I dont watch war movies.

call me a pussy, but that was an all to real thing to me, and Im not a huge fan of watching it.

But if they could finally portray marines for the way they really are, it would be eye-opening, and a good thing.

i'm pumped. i read the book too, however on friday/saturday i'm going to be on ex firing the machine gun so won't be able to check it till sunday night

Re: Jarhead: Who else is excited?

I"m gonna watch it. I read the book and enjoyed it, but it doesn't seem like it's a movie that people get "pumped up" for. I accredit that to Kanye West.

we will see for sure but anthony swofford (author of the book and the marine/lead charcter--gyllanhall's character) had a ton of influence in this movie, what went in and out and worked with mendes with the script. this will be a movie that isn't pro war or against war, but about war from the mind of someone who was in it...not the mind of a man behind a camera. if swofford had as much to do with this film as mendes said he did then there will not be too much hollywood fluff about it (there has to be a little to appeal to a broad general audience cause if you read the book you would know that a lot of that grit can't be directed straight to screen).

it could be a bust who knows, i hope not.

mendes has said some incredible stuff about jake g. and why he took the role...

Re: Jarhead: Who else is excited?

ghyllenhal comes from an acting family and is a very good actor imho.

he also named his company 'nine stories' tribute to salinger. totally cool in my book.

Re: Jarhead: Who else is excited?

I think I have to see this movie, for obvious reasons, but I'm not particularly excited about it. I have a feeling it will be a bit too touchy-feely-hollywoodish for me.

-Jihad

PS. I'm going to wait to see it for a couple weeks, as seeing a movie called "Jarhead" opening week in San Diego could be a nightmare.

i HATE this. If you're excited to see a movie, [censored] reading reviews, you already know you want to see it.

I was looking forward to seeing Fantastic 4 (yea shut up) and me and my friend were going to, and then he read all the reviews and decided it sucked.

THINK FOR YOURSELF

bbadfljk.

Not that reviews arent good for a movie that you dunno if you want to see.. but if you decide something looks good, why let someone you don't know, make you not want to see something.

Re: Jarhead: Who else is excited?

According to a report on NPR, they took the book, which to those who didn't read it is a personal account "getting inside one man's head" into a more encompassing perspective of the Corps, which seriously undermines the book's original intent.

It's OOH RAH! people.

If this movie is done right, it will be terrific. Knowing a Jarhead, and being one are 2 diffrent things. I am NOT a Jarhead, but a Navy corpsman (jarhead medic). I was with 1st force recon in Somalia, and trained with the jarheads at Pendleton for some time.

And yes, I am excited as well.

Shajen 11-04-2005 09:54 AM

Re: Jarhead: Who else is excited?

what area of Pendleton?

I was stationed at Pendleton for most of the 5 years I was in. Didn't actually spend a lot of time there though.

LSUfan1 11-04-2005 10:05 AM

Re: Jarhead: Who else is excited?

I spent most of my time at the Hospital and at Del Mar area.

Had one hell of a good time with the jarheads! Gained a complete respect for them while I was there.

Had 2 jarheads probably save my life. I was out in Oceanside with a buddy when 2 mexican guys drove by screaming some crap about us military pukes, so we told them they were number one. They proceeded to get out of the car and come at us with baseball bats. About the time I started praying, 2 Marines showed up and the mexicans no longer liked their numbers. Will never forget it.

My brother is also in the Corps, but he is 4th Marines....spends his summers out that way though.
