Vegas Trip Report Pt. 1 - planning

I am going to Vegas this weekend and next weekend. This weekend with a bunch of buddies just to go have a good time, next weekend with a bunch of different friends for a bachelor party.

I was really unsure of how much money to take. I ended up deciding on $6500 in 100s and $500 in 20s for this trip. I am going to be at the Mandalay Bay and will be playing mostly craps and blackjack. Apparently they have some low-limit NL there, so I imagine I'll probably be drunk and playing that at some point. Maybe we'll go to Bellagio at some point and play some poker there. I dunno. We are going to Delmonico's for steak tomorrow night. That will rule. Apparently the Bellagio has a $1500NL tourney either Saturday or Sunday. I'd like to play that, but that's likely to start too early for me to make it. We'll see.

I just picked up my shiny blue shirt from the dry cleaners. A friend is picking me up in a little over an hour. I need to finish up some work before then. I would like to get a burrito, but might not have time. If I can get stuff finished in time to get a burrito, I will be very excited.

Update on Sunday or Monday.

The real problem is delmonicos. I think their dress code bans vinyl masks.

I can't wait to find out how the burrito was. Was it juicy? Dry? Overflowing? Behind every good trip report is a good burrito.

Not at all. The reason for his mask is one of practicality - He is wanted in at least 23 states for sundry high crimes and misdemeanors.

Burritos & debauchery... two CRITICAL components of a trip report. I hope there is a stripper attached to that burrito, it makes the report much funnier!

Ulysses, the best plans are the simple ones. Just plan on getting drunk and the rest will take care of itself.

"I just picked up my shiny blue shirt from the dry cleaners"

I always imagined you as the type of person who owned so many shiny blue shirts that you just throw them away after you wear them. What a let down.

That is correct. However, every time I buy a new one, I have it dry cleaned before wearing it.

Man, this was a really f'd up part of the whole trip. My buddy calls me up as I'm about to go get my burrito and tells me he's going to be here a few minutes early. WTF? Who shows up early? I ended up getting a cold meatloaf sandwich at a place closer than the burrito place. That sandwich is great, but in retrospect, I should have stuck to the plan and made him wait.

OK, let's see.

Get there and decide to play an hour of BJ before dinner. Manage to go 0-for-9 w/ double-downs to be stuck a quick $2k before dinner. Nice.

Dinner at Wolfgang Puck's place at Mandalay Bay. Had squash soup and veal parm. Delicious. The hostess was super-hot. Next to us was a table with 7 fat girls and 1 hot girl. That was weird.

More blackjack, stuck $3k at one point, end the night stuck about $1500. The amount of drinking that has occurred between 6pm and 6am does not bode well for Saturday.

Some friends who have been watching poker on TV decide they want to check out Binion's, so we go there. They have a $60 rebuy tourney, so we all play it. With 5k chips left and 800-1200 blinds, two guys w/ 10k call to me in the BB. I push in my remaining 4k chips w/ T6o. First guy folds, second guy thinks a while and starts talking about pot odds. He calls. I flip over my hand and he flips over 78o!!!!! Unfortunately, he makes a pair. The funny part, though, was the CO flipping out when he sees our hands flipped over. Lose another $500 or so at BJ downtown. My hangover is of epic proportions.

Dinner at Delmonico's. After about 4 glasses of wine, my hangover finally starts to disappear. Instead of the usual bone-in ribeye, I went with a special. Trio of rack of lamb, pork tenderloin, beef tenderloin. Delicious. Foie gras to start. The next table over had a Knight Imperial (6L bottle) of Opus One. $5300. Nice. Our waitress was really hot. And 42. And a grandmother. That was weird.

More blackjack and a little craps. We were all betting $50 to $300 a hand. The woman next to us was betting $1000-3000/hand. Again end up going down to about $3k down at one point, but have a little streak to end the night down about $1300 for the trip. The hand of the trip was a friend's hand - he is down to his last $400 and ready to quit. He decides to make one last bet. He puts $300 in his pocket and bets $100. 44 against a dealer's 6. And then a third four and a fourth four - so he has to take out his three remaining hundreds. And two doubles, so he has to borrow $200 more from me. He doesn't make a hand over fourteen. Dealer flips a ten. Nice. And then an Ace. Ouch. To add insult to injury, the next 6 cards out of the deck are tens.

Walking back to my room, I notice a craps table going wild. I take a look. Guy rolls point, much cheering. Next roll, he craps out. There's a sigh at the table, then a second later, the entire table starts cheering and clapping for like a minute! Guy apparently rolled forever and ever. I am a little embarrassed to report that I stopped drinking Saturday at about 2am.

Sunday involved some blackjack and a little more losing. I think the net loss on the trip was somewhere between $1500 and $2000. More or less pretty much even the whole rest of the weekend after the first horrendous hour.

Oh, at the airport I try to hit the $1.1M progressive Wheel of Fortune jackpot but am unsuccessful. I do win like $40, though.

All in all, a great trip w/ some great friends, but outside of non-stop drinking for 12 hours Friday, really one of the lowest-key Vegas trips ever. I think this largely had to do with the fact that there just didn't seem to be that many hot girls in Vegas this weekend, especially at the Mandalay Bay, where we spent most of our time. The crowds at Rum Jungle, V Bar, the main casino bar, and Red Square all sucked. Oh well.

Next week is the bachelor party weekend, so I'll be sure to make up for the lack of debauchery this weekend.

No kidding. I want to hear more about if the blue shirt just didn't work, or if the talent pool was not good enough for you to even waste wearing the blue shirt.

Also, more thoughts on Delmonicos? I've read reviews online, and they seem to be somewhat mixed. Either glowing and gushing, or overpriced and overrated. No one seems to fall in the middle.

I went there last sept and I loved it. Compared to other high end steak houses I found it to be average in terms of price but the quality of meal was above average.

The talent pool was underwhelming. Also, instead of sleeping by the pool during the day on Saturday, I was dragged downtown to Binion's. I think that was very bad for the energy level and flow of the weekend. Saturday should have much more of a recovery then ramp up period, starting w/ drinks by the pool.

After years of sticking w/ the Hard Rock, I was kind of getting tired of the scene and have been trying out new hotels (Palms, Mandalay). Based on my last handful of experiences, I think I'm going to go back to staying at the Hard Rock.

Vegas Trip Report Pt. 3 - weekend two planning

OK. I'm off to Vegas again. This time it is for a friend's bachelor party. Since I'm going to be so drunk all weekend, I decided not to reload, so I'm heading back w/ my remaining cash from last trip - about $5k in 100s and $300 in 20s.

I have what feels like a pretty good plan. This afternoon I'll play some blackjack at Mandalay before dinner and win about $1000. I think dinner will be either China Grill or Nobu. After dinner we'll hit some bars/clubs, then latenight I'll take the $1000 I won at BJ to the craps table and turn it into about $4000.

Saturday during the day will be the pool, then I'll try to win another $2000 or so at BJ. Big steak dinner Saturday night, then probably something involving strippers. If I'm still standing, I'll try and win another thousand or two at craps latenight.

Sunday maybe I'll play some poker or something. Dunno. That is all up in the air. At the airport I'm going to play the Wheel of Fortune slots. Last weekend I hit a 250 coin jackpot on that. This weekend I'm going to try harder to hit the progressive $1M+ jackpot.

I'm making one important change. No shiny blue shirt this weekend. The last three times the shiny blue shirts have not fared well. I'm going with a black/blue cheetah print shirt and a shiny red shirt. Feeling very good about the selections.

Also, instead of lunch before leaving, I'm going to have lunch at the airport.

My free UltimatePoints sunglasses arrived today, so I think that's a pretty good omen.
