Ultimate Multitabling Setup v1.0

im looking to get a 4monitor setup going for multitabling. i currently have a 2 2001fp setup and i use a recliner because the recliner is so much more comfortable then any sort of desk chair.

if i purchase 2 more monitors i am going to need a quad monitor stand, but i would like for the quad monitor stand to be attached to a swinging pole so that i can move the monitors directly in front of my vision while on the recliner and so that i can push the monitors to the side when i want to get up.

then, because the monitors are going to be very heavy the weight from the monitors wont be balanced properly. i will need something to make the pole stand firmly in place so that it doesnt tip over.

here is the model of my design for those who know of a cost effective way of setting it up or are interested to get this setup for themselves. id really like to have this setup for myself but i dont know how to get someone to build it for me. any suggestions or is there any similiar products already for sale online?

there's gotta be stuff available online. Get a new chair while your at it; yours looks a bit uncomfortable...

Heard of the search function?

This has already been discussed ad nauseum.

I love it how a guy with 20 posts asks a guy with 3K posts if he knows how to use the search function.

Cracks me up.

And he also thinks that this has been discussed ad nauseum. While multitabling set ups maybe frequently discussed, this is a pretty unique situation adn I am actually interested in the answer because this intrigues me as well.

this has never been discussed to my knowledge and would also be fairly useful for me. i've got a 4 monitor set up on a desk but might want to move it out of the way to be able to better see the tv on the wall.

someone posted some crazy chair contraption a while back but I don't think it had 4 monitors. That thing looks pretty cool. Get 'er done!

sorry for that.

Fish around this site LCD Monitor Arms, they do custom work, so you could send them an email or call.

Here is what you want. The stand is really just a pole mount so if you wanted to put it on a swing arm base it is possible. Here is the problem however. It's quite a bit of cable to manage for 4 monitors so swinging the darn thing can be awkward.

yes it all works with Dell2001fp's since they are Vesa compatible mounting units.

A few months ago, I built an "L" shaped desk so that I could use my computer while sitting in my recliner. Here's a picture:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y22...skRecliner.jpg

$100 worth of supplies (including some tools) and several hours later and you get what you see above. It's not exactly pretty on the eyes, but it's functional. It's on wheels and I just push it out of my way when I get up. This kind of thing would probably work for you, but you'd need to adjust it a little bit for all that weight.

I used to have pretty much chronic back pain, but since using this setup, my back rarely bothers me anymore. I love sitting in a recliner all day.

Re: Ultimate Multitabling Setup v1.0

correct conclusion, improper logic.

this setup is poor because you have to turn your head to play, bad ergonomics. if it were right in front of you then the CRT/wires wouldn't be a problem at all.

OP: put the swivel in the base, it'll be much stronger there. don't think circular, make the base BIG... put the bulk of the mass under the chair where it cannot be seen.

Re: Ultimate Multitabling Setup v1.0

hi randy, this looks like it might be good for the job although it doesnt look like it would be able to balance right with 4 monitors. on the site it says maximum monitor weight can be 12lbs so that clearly wont hold 4 2001fps. it comes to $290 which is a fair price if it worked.

ZENVIEW ARENA

A slightly different look at a 6 monitor setup...the primary screen is a huge 30" workspace and 2560x1600 resolution, while the secondary screens are 20.1" with 1600x1200 resolution, with the 2 wing monitors in portrait mode.

Re: Ultimate Multitabling Setup v1.0

Awesome idea! I've been thinking of something similar, but I'd like to get a setup where the monitors face straight down so that I can lay in bed and play.

Re: ZENVIEW ARENA

Find a buddy who can weld and let him go buckwild. If they already have a 4 monitor swing arm I'd imagine a 45lb. weight would be alright for a base. If you wanted to get crafty you could put a big ball bearing between whatever the smaller base on the pole is and the 45 lb weight and you might get some swivel action

Re: Ultimate Multitabling Setup v1.0

2001 FP's are pretty heavy. I think you are going to have substantial problems with the weighting/balancing of your stand. Even if you do get it to balance I think it will be incredibly unstable (high center of gravity) and a small knock sends 4 $500 monitors crashing to the floor.

edit:

I think it might make more sense to have a more stable stand (a table) for the monitors on the side of the chair, and then turn the chair into the monitors, rather than vis a versa.

Re: Ultimate Multitabling Setup v1.0

Suspend the monitors from the ceiling with cables.

Re: Ultimate Multitabling Setup v1.0

I think weight is going to be your biggest problem. I don't know that any of the typicaly swivel mounts will be able to hold 4 monitors.

Dell's site says the 2001FP weighs 18.72 pounds with the stand. I'd guess that they weight about 16 without the actual stand. So figure for four monitors, 64 pounds. This page specifically mentions supporting up to four monitors with their mount. I'd give them a call and ask them if they have anything which will fit your needs.

I need to figure out what stand to use as well.

Re: Ultimate Multitabling Setup v1.0

I agree with Moo. I've never seen a monitor stand that can handle that much weight in the cantilevered configuration you want. It would either have to have an extremely heavy base or be bolted to your chair/floor.

My first thought was MyPCE (which someone mentioned already). They might be able to do a customer 4 monitor setup for you.

Alternately, if you find a stand that works for 2 monitors and has adjustible height, you could put one on either side of your chair with the monitors of one above the monitors of the other.
