A one liner.

"Oseh Shalom Bimramav, hu ya'aseh shalom aleinu, v'al kol Yisrael."

"(He who) makes peace in the heavens, he should make peace on all of us, and on all of Israel."

Re: A one liner.

A big part of the problem is the belief in someone who makes peace in the heavens.

Yes, there clearly aren't enough religious appeals in this conflict. Imagine how bloody things would be if both sides were secular!

At least they're praying for the right thing.

Re: A one liner.

You're right. How obnoxious of Jews to pray for something as self-indulgent as peace.

Hineh ma tov umana'im, shevet achim, gam yachad.

"See how good and pleasant it is, when men sit as brothers united."

I've always liked that one better, including the beautiful melody.

Respectfully disagree

A big part of the problem is that only one side believes that despite it all, despite the violence and bloodshed, there is light at the end of the tunnel and peace will soon reign over Israel.

Re: Respectfully disagree

I dont believe MOST Jews in Israel really sincerly believe there will be PEACE with the arabs in the near future. It really depens on your definition of peace. If you believe that Israel and Egypt are in a state of peace...well maybe you missed the celebration if Hitlers birthday in the Cairo newspapers or on the campus of Cairo University...

So, if by Peace you mean the arab regimes are too weak and scared of being nuked out of existence to make yet another attempt to kill all of the Jews...then perhaps yes there will be peace. If by peace you mean laurel leaves, olive branchs, free flow of ideas and people..etc etc then no dont hold your breath for that given the education in hate most the arab regimes are provining their children with.

Re: Respectfully disagree

Nobody that I still speak to has any hope of peace in the near future, but it's still the ideal.

By peace, it's really more like "Just leave us alone, and we won't bother you either."

zaxx19 12-09-2004 04:04 AM

Re: Respectfully disagree

and they wont bother us...until they constitute a majority in Israel proper then what do you think will happen?? Think Lebanon with nukes.

They need to go. If it means removing a large numbers of settlements then so be it. But there must be a fairly complete seperation of the 2 peoples and that INCLUDES the removal of Palestinians inside Israel proper or you will not end the conflict.

The real problem is the unbelief in the Prince of Peace.

I've always wondered what meant one of the songs we sang in the All-Newton Chorus in elementary school. It was a Hebrew song, and if I can recall, it went something like this: Eliyahu hanavi, lanu hashalom ya vi. Very pretty tune, sung in rounds. Of course I didn't spell it right or put the proper spaces in the above, and maybe I don't even remember it right. Translation?

"Eliyahu haNavi, Eliyahu, haTishbi, Eliyahu, Elihayu, Eliyahu, Eliyahu haGiladi"

Eliyahu

On Passover, Jews open the door in the middle of the Seder (the passover meal) and leave a cup of wine on the table for him to drink... Every family has a kid who exclaims, at some point during the meal "I saw the cup move!"

We\'re approaching a new year

Bashana haba'a, neshev al hamirpeset
venispor tziporim nodedot.
Yeladim, bechoufsha, yesachachu tofeset
ben habayit, oul'beyn hasadot.

Od tire, od tire,
kama tov yihye,
bashana, bashana haba'a

In the new year, when there's peace we'll sit on the porch
and count the migrating birds
Kids will run around outside playing tag
Between the house and between the fields

Come see, come see,
How good it will be
in the year, in the year, that is coming.
