which is more profitable? NL OR LIMIT?

i am just wondering. which is the easier game to learn and is more profitable?

Re: which is more profitable? NL OR LIMIT?

NL is much more entertaining. Limit might be easier to learn.

When played well, NL requires a much smaller bankroll.

You need to learn both.

On the same bankroll you'll make pretty much the same kind of dough in either betting form. A true expert probably has a higher expectation in NL on the same bankroll though. Start with the one you prefer.

Many people would disagree with this. They say it's too boring waiting for good hands. NL is much of a "play premium hands" game compared to limit.

Either one can be very profitable and you should definitely know both.

For me no limit has less swings than limit because you can make them pay to outdraw you, as in limit those idiots never fold.

They do fold in limit as well. This is actually one of the reasons I personally enjoy playing limit more. How to play properly in multiway pots in limit is one of the trickier things in hold'em.

That and the ADD child in me dies of boredom from NL.

I hate it when people call with hands that are behind. It's costing me money I tell you!!!!

You need to learn both to be good at either, but start with limit. NL will get you into bad habits (namely, you will likely become a weak-tight player), and good habits (like value betting) are much easier to learn at limit (and also you can think about situations mathematically, so it'll be a bit easier IMO). Both are good, both are profitable, play the one you like best once you've done both.

I disagree. You cannot consistently beat any but the worst players playing only "premium hands". I am much more apt to play borderline hands for 1 bet in NL than in limit. Do you see why?

De gustubus... and all that. Try them both. Figure out which one you like more and concentrate more on that one, but like several other people have already said, it's best to know a little about both.

Me, I'm a (bad) limit player who avoids NL cash games because I do poorly in the NL tournies I enter. Had I played more NL when I was just starting, I have a feeling I'd probably be doing better in both disciplines by now.

But asking whether NL or limit is easier or more profitable is akin to asking whether cantaloupes or piccolos are more handsome.

In short, NL is all about implied odds and deception. I've noticed many of the limit players here seem to think NL is a game played with big starting hands, but limit is the big starting hand game.

Re: which is more profitable? NL OR LIMIT?

NL is much easier to play as you can weak-tight in the lower limits and still hammer the games significantly. But limit is definitely more profitable as there are lots of fishies swimming in the mid-to-higher limits, the fishies just get slaughtered too fast and get discouraged in NL and it's rare to find a truly clueless player at the $400 NL buyin limits and above.

Re: which is more profitable? NL OR LIMIT?

I'd say limit is easier to learn for many because you have less options. The more analytical players are drawn to it because it's more like math. I think people who initally take to NL more easily may like the feel of the game a little more. You can stretch out more playing more hands and you have more control.

Dan Harrington says that the expert player has more of an advantage in NL because 1)he can make superior deductions about what the other players are holding by the way they bet (among other things) and 2)he can adjust the pot odds more accurately to make others make mistakes.

Switching between both is +EV because you can take the skills you learn from one game to the other.
