my most embarassing experience at a poker table

last semester i was studying (if you can call it that) in london... i frequented the victoria casino about five times a week and was pretty chummy with most of the regulars there...

then one day they were discussing some random guy and one of the younger guys at the table said "ah, i hate that bloke, he's a wanker..." being the sophisticated american i am, i couldn't make sense of his slang, and i asked, innocently, hesitantly: what's a wanker?

a loooooong silence ensued... "uuuuh, mate.. it's someone who wanks"

I thought a wanker was a part of male genitalia. I didn't realize it was an actual person. If I call someone a d---, I wouldn't call them a dicker. I guess you could call them a masterbater, but that is so clinical and not very harsh.

Learn something new every day. Can the UK people here corroborate? Wanker is:

a. D---
b. Person who masterbates
c. Both

From UrbanDictionary.com:

the term plonker started out as a reference to someone who was forever drunk on cheap wine (cheap wine is nicknamed plonk) this person was usualy a homeless person, or poor person.

today the term plonker is a very light hearted insult. Its not even seen as an insult, its like calling someone a wally. Its in no way ment maliciously. you call someone a plonker when they say or do something stupid.

A WANG is male genitalia. To wank means to masturbate, and subsequently a wanker is one who masturbates.

Wanker - This is a derogatory term used to describe someone who is a bit of a jerk. It actually means someone who masturbates and also has a hand signal that can be done with one hand at people that cannot see you shouting "wanker" at them. This is particularly useful when driving.

Taken from this guide.

Wanker is a perjorative term for one who wanks, or (masturbates). In Britain it is particularly used of someone (usually male) who is a self-obsessed show-off.

It originated in Britain and is similar to the US insult "jerk-off". Although masturbation is acknowledged as a widespread practice, the insulting properties of these terms still remain.

Mid-2004, I played live for the first time in almost a year. First pot I won, I blanked out and just grabbed the chips (sitting directly across from the dealer, so they were right there). The dealer practically slapped my hands before pushing it to me.

Not poker related, but I was on safari at one point with a British couple and an American couple. During the day my group and the American couple had gone out together and seen two lions mating. After mating a few times, the male tried to mount the female again but the female pushed him away. When we got back to camp the American couple was telling this amazing story to the British couple. The guy goes "The lion went to the lioness and tried to mount her again. But she would have none of that and just tossed him off." The British couple (and I) cracked up. The American couple was very confused.

You have to take into account the fact that this comes from the culture that refuses to pronounce "aluminum" correctly.

This is what occured to me as well.

I went to England for 2 weeks in 1989 and every other sentence was "What a wanker!" "Did he seem like a bit of a wanker to you?" etc etc.

Maybe the phrase was more common at that time but I can't imagine being there for very long without hearing this term or picking up on what it means.

You appear slightly confused, it's pronounced alumunium because that's how it's correctly spelt.

I actually did have a dealer slap my hand once. It was at a Pai-Gow Poker table.

I had really never gambled too much live so I didn't know all the rules of the casino. I did know how to play Pai-Gow Poker, however, so when my wife wanted to try it, she sat down next to me and I helped her out.

Once, when she showed me her cards so she could verify with me what her best move was, I turned the cards towards me so I could see them better. At that point, the dealer informed me that I wasn't allowed to touch her cards.

Well, a while later, I forgot about that rule and touched her cards again when she showed me her hand. As soon as I did that, the dealer reached out and slapped my hand! I was a little embarassed, but it was pretty funny. Both the dealer and the pit boss were laughing, since they knew I wasn't trying to cheat or anything. It had been a very friendly table, so it was more a light-hearted slap than anything.
