Help me buy a car!

Ok, I know nothing about cars. Some guy asked me why I don't just get a viper, and I responded that I dont even know what a viper is. I know nothing.

I just moved to LA a week ago, and I desperately need a car to get around. I'm aiming for the $20,000 - $25,000 price range, although I could be suckered into paying as much as $30,000.

I think I want a luxury car (definately not a jeep or suv or anything like that). I'm under the impression that anything new will be way out of my price range, so something used that's 2-4 years old will be fine.

I'll be blunt. I want something that will impress girls, something that a 19 year old girl would look twice when she sees a 19 year old guy driving it.

Not only do I know nothing about cars, I know nothing about buying them. Is carmax a good place to buy one? I don't even know how that works really.

I want something small and compact. I listen to music all the time and play it very loud, so a decent sound system is important too. Other than that, looks are the only other important thing. I don't really like weird looking cars. I probably want it either black or silver, but like I said, I do want something that can potentially turn heads.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Dude - you asked this in MIRC.

Here are the definitive answers.
* Subaru WRX
* BMW 330 Coupe
* Honda S2000 Convertible (2 seater)
* Infinity G35 Coupe
* Pontiac Solstice 2006 (Sick Convertible)

Coupe is 2 doors if you didn't know already

A used lexus (I don't know what model) would be good. They are reliable, nice looking, and have nice interiors.

In a thread a while back you were talking about your move to LA, and someone asked why, and you didn't end up answering, so...

Why did you move to LA?

Even before poker it was my favorite city. I hate cold weather, I hate the south, and the girls are insanely beautiful here. I also love the culture, everything is new and impressive.

Being closer to the poker scene is another nice bonus.

On his website it said something about a brother of his in addition to a friend of his brother moving to LA and he decided to come along and share roomspace.

Maybe I should just let him explain.

LA really is an awesome city, though. Especially now that you'll have Commerce Casino. Nothing much is around Virginia, I don't think.

Yeah, my older brother is in a band called Raine. The drummer just graduated from BC or BU (forget which) majoring in film. Naturally, LA has the best job prospects for him. My brother (who just graduated from CMU) followed to keep the band together. The 3 of us are now living together.

So you, a 19 year old, plan on playing at commerce and other places in LA or vegas even though you've been on TV for playing poker, have had quite a few articles written about you, and have a blog (how many people read this? I don't know) with your picture on it.

This should be interesting...

2000-2002 Porsche Boxters will run you about $25,000-$30,000.

Here is a 2001 Boxter in your area listed at $27,995. She has 25,000 miles. LINK :

2000-2001 Corvettes are also in your price range

LINK

This car will get you laid. Listed at $27,000 it has 21,000 miles on it:

This car is selling for $22,295 and has 17,000 miles on it. It will also get you laid:

Re: Help me buy a car!

To be honest, you're going to have a hard time turning heads in LA. Not as tough as Vegas (where Bentleys and Ferraris seem to grow on trees), but tough. Every 19 year old kid seems to have a BMW. The ones that don't have imports that seem to have had about $90,000 put into them.

Just get a car that you like, and be happy with it. My next car will be some sort of an unassuming sedan, probably a cheaper benz, since I like them and don't give a [censored] about what other people like. They'll run about $25k for a decent small model a couple years old.

Black/Silver are also my 2 options when I look at cars.

A lot of guys have Acuras. Look at those perhaps. You can get them under $30k no problem, even new.

This is a very good point. Granted I go to a very rich school, but all of the cars mentioned in this thread are probably right around the median in terms of price of cars on campus.

In High School, cars did a great job turning heads.

In the real world.. meh... not so much so unless it's an absolute rare gem/beauty like a Lotus Elise.

So unique.

Re: Help me buy a car!

get a classic. since i assume you won't have to commute to a job, and your primary qualifications seem to be style, value and comfort, you should definitly be considering an older car- one that will A: be cheap to maintain, B: get you laid C: maintain it's value (newer cars depreciate in value like crazy)

here's one of my favs- the 62 lincoln... suicide doors, sweet lines, etc. it was the car that morpheus and co rolled in in the first matrix.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y19.../62lincoln.jpg

this particular one sold for 13k, you'd want to spend a couple more thousand on a stereo, some dice for the mirror, maybe some mods for a little more power, etc...

Update:

2003 Subaru WRX - too ugly
99 m3 - I think this is too expensive for something 6 years old, although it looks cool
BMW 330 Coupe - looks cool and is in my price range
Honda S2000 Convertible (2 seater) - looks cool and is in my price range, but i cant drive stick
Infinity G35 Coupe - looks cool and is in my price range
350 Z - looks cool and is in my price range
Chevy Corvette - a little out of my price range and isn't exactly my style
BMW Z3 - looks cool and is in my price range
2002 Lexus IS300 - doesn't look cool enough

So here are the cars i've liked so far
BMW 330 Coupe
Infinity G35 Coupe
350 Z
BMW Z3

Also, I would really appreciate some advice on how to go about buying one of these. Is Carmax the best way to go?

Go with the G35 Coupe for sure. If for some stupid reason you must pick something else from this list, then the Z is 2nd, followed by the 330 and then the Z3.

I'll second Duke's comment about how none of these cars are actually going to turn many heads in L.A. I guess they'll get you to a 'respectable' level, at least. If you really want to stand out, you're going to have to get something more unique - maybe some sort of classic car and fix it up.

how about a more modern classic... IMO, the sexiest car you can get for under 20k:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y19...dr/corrado.jpg

corrado. this thing would probably run about 12-16k, and it''s gonna blow the doors off of a Z3
