Summer of [censored]

I've decided that I am going to focus this summer of poker to actually change my standard of living for the better. The summer of [censored] starts on July 1 and runs through the end of September.

Where I am at now.

I was being staked at 5/10 6max where I was winning at a little under 2bb/100 over 30k hands but the stake deal was not very good so I decided to go back on my own.

I currently play 6max 25NL. I've played this game for over a year now and win $25/hr + rake since Jan (150k+ hands)

My goal is to work my way back to 5/10 where I want to make $100hr including rake.

I plan on going from the 25NL tables to 3/6 6max to 5/10.

Each week I want to get in 10K hands. On those weeks I miss my goal I will get a minimum of 5k hands. My biggest problem seems to be going a week to two at a time without playing at all, so the 5k minimum is important.

Along with poker goals I want to work on few other things as the summer of [censored] is about good times on and off the tables as well as being well rounded. I want to find a hobby or activity of some sort, get out more and work seriously on my novel.

Goal 1, is to put in 25k hands of 25NL. Doing that will get me to the 3/6 6max tables.

I think getting a deal with Klepton would be better than playing 25 NL.

It is a fantasy type setting similar to Lord of the Rings.

No real content reply....

Oh that novel you've been working on for how long now? Yes, how are things coming with that?? You got a nice main character? He fall into some difficult to overcome situation which in the end he winds up better for having been in it? You got a richly developed supporting cast? Yup, in that novel you've been working on for how long now? It's going well, the novel everyone's been hearing about work on for three years? Almost ready for publication?

Sorry, if any of you saw the new Family Guy last Sunday you might get a laugh, otherwise this makes absolutely no sense. Either way, in all seriousness good luck with your goals.

Take care,
Matt

A) Best of luck

B) When you typed out this post, did you actually type "[censored]", or just a swear word like f[/i]uck, that got censored?

A better question is: did you originally try to make your forum name a swear word that was censored?

July 1

I have been tossing around another possible writing idea and I thought I would get some opinions of it. The "hero" would be by a day a professional poker player who travels the world chasing the latest tournament of big game. This is just a cove r though as his real profession is a hitman, either working for the US government of assassain for hire I haven't decided yet. The crux of the story would be his struggles to juggle his "normal life" and that of telling his tales of being a trained killer.

Thoughts.

Here is a link to the beginning of what I'm working on now.

untitled

My daughter is staying with me for the next week, which occupies alot of time. Consequently I will be looking to only do 750 hands most days for while she is here. After that I want to put in some serious time to get to the 25K hands by mid July.

You're a cool cat and I wish you the best. This idea sounds horrible. Tilt meets True Lies? I think you would be able to write something better if you tried to be more original and stayed away from poker. You're too close to it.

I hope you prove me wrong.

Ya the more I think about it, the more I believe it would be a bad idea for a book but a not a decent idea for a comic book.

Unless you're talking about the linked one, which is going to be what I write about. If so then yes I hope I prove you wrong.

Well, anything's better than another huge Tolkien-derivative EFC novel. Maybe yours is better than that, but the snippet you provided isn't promising.

If you're going to be serious about this, spend at least a month reading fantasy that isn't Tolkien-derivative, and spend a lot of time refining your premise to something really stellar before you start actually writing. Don't latch on to the first novel idea you get.

(Sorry if I come off as overly bitchy, but this is my field.)

Re: July 1

I do worry alot about it being too tolkien esq but at the same time that is what my interest is in right now. Changing genres at this point would not provide much entertainment for me.

My hope is to do something that would be a cross between lord of the rings and something like the winds of war. Basically instead of a situation where one person or group in involved in winning every battle along the way to winning the war, I want to great a few seperate and distinct groups of characters each involved in a seperate struggle that when viewed together become part of a larger struggle. These characters would not generally be aware of involved with one another as they were in LOTR.

Well, I don't know about the rest of the story, but as a movie this would have the potential to have one of the classic poker table scenes. Hero is chasing his biggest mark through several cities, playing poker along the way, suffering bad beat after bad beat. But the mark is eluding him until he follows him to Vegas and, lo and behold, the mark turns up and joins the NL poker game hero is in. They wind up heads up and all-in after the flop, hero with 999 versus 3 to a flush. Mark draws runner-runner to make his flush. Mark jumps up, yelling, "I beat you, flush over 3 nines." Hero calmly pulls out his 9mm and drills the mark between the eyes and says, "Well, actually, I have 4 nines."

Villain laughs. "I don't care how many 9s you have...my goons still have an equity edge with their AKs! AK...Fourty-sevens, that is!"
Shootout ensues.

All the guns get shot out of everyone's hands, and the Hero and Villain are forced into a titanic hand-to-hand struggle. It culminates fifteen minutes later with the Hero astride the Villain's unconscious body.

He wipes his face with an oily rag and, still panting, says,

"Now that's a bad beat."
