Isn't the payroll angle entirely shot now? It's going to be a great series; I'm pretty pumped.

Im really looking forward to the Bellhorn and Wang matchup tomorrow. A pitcher who doesnt strike out or walk anyone vs a batter that strikes out and walks 50% of the time. Should be epic.

Sox will take 3/4 this series.

when comparing two teams starting pichers its common practice, although perhaps not widely recognized as such, to exclude those players who aren't starting pitchers, such as a team's closer, from the comparison.

nah, its more fun to needle yankees fans that it is to argue over which massive overspender got less return for their buck in various departments.

Re: Ahhh, baseball. NYY vs Red Sox

over which massive overspender got

i dont think its fair to group the sox in with the NYY in terms of money spent. the NYY are on a totally different level than even the sox. for example:

the NYY have a payroll 85 million more than the sox, whilst the sox can fit into the second tier (123-90) along with 5 other teams. the ramirez contract is what puts boston over 110m and that is the result of the previous regime.

sorry, the comparisons are inevitable. i think the sox represent the iceberg.

Re: Ahhh, baseball. NYY vs Red Sox

the sox spent 20% more than the next closet team. not quite the yankess but still up there.

but what's really nuts to me is that when you include the amount the yankess have to pay because of these salaries (i.e. the 30ish million dollar luxury tax tab they have to pay in the fall on top of their 208 payroll), they'll spend ~115 million more than the sox's 124 (they have 750K in luxury tax I think), ~150 million more than the orioles and ~200 million more than the blue jays

the yankess payroll + luxury tax is well over 3 times the orioles payroll is ~5 times what the blue jays spent.

Re: Ahhh, baseball. NYY vs Red Sox

I am a Houston fan and I have to say anyone that makes fun of the pay rolls of the Yankees or Red Sox is just jealous. There isn't a fan out there that didn't wish their owner would fork over whatever it took to win.

In Houston the GM has to walk around kissing McClane's ass, "Please let me spend some money, Please, I want Adam Dunn please"

thats the point i try to diffuse often. while the sox DO spend more money than the rest of baseball, they CANT fork over whatever it takes. if they could, pedro would still be here. the amount the sox spent this year is more than likely the ceiling for them (not taking into account inflation, tickets going up etc) the reason the NYY payroll stopped at 208 is because they simply ran out of people to buy.

CollinEstes 07-14-2005 04:49 PM

Re: Ahhh, baseball. NYY vs Red Sox

You are probably right. I think the difference is Sox and Yanks will do everything they CAN do in their budget. Other owners don't do that.

Re: Ahhh, baseball. NYY vs Red Sox

doing stuff like paying bernie 13 million, mussina 19 million and kevin brown 15+ million is not doing what "it takes to win," and it certainly doesn't rouse feelings of jealousy. Maybe for you its jealousy, for a lot of people its like watching a car crash as you drive by or having an appreciation for absudist art.

Re: Ahhh, baseball. NYY vs Red Sox

Don't get me wrong I hate the Yankees. I hate all the American League. But I do wish my owner took a chance and over paid a guy every now and then.

its moronic is what it is. thats the part that bothers me when people lump the sox in with the yankees when talking payroll. the majority of the money the sox spend is well spent (and even the largest misapplication of funds, ramirez, was done by a previous group).

Coupled with the fact that he recieves 4.5m of his 17m signing bonus this year would bring it to 18m.

your a fcuking idiot. so its 18m this year insted of 20m. who cares? you made post showing how his OPS is 180 points higher than a guy who makes 1/6th of what he does.

do yourself a favor, and be quite. you make yourself look like a retard every time you open your yap.

bring in your bullpen embarrassment. At least Stanton could get lefties out. Lefties hit Embree better than righties this year. 317. Lmao.

the NYY front office is a joke.
