but the bong filters out a lot of bad crap too, esp. particles - I was always getting a bit of particle/ash in most pipes unless I had a screen.

Pipes are by far the most convenient really, smell the least and pretty easy on the lungs. I'd almost always choose a binger over it though because it's more efficient, more bang.

True relaxation necessitates blunts though I think.

You familiar with vaporizers? I think you might be interested.
