Beethoven's 9th (particularly the 4th (?) movement, the Ode To Joy) has to be up there somewhere.
Barber's Adagio for Strings (used in The Elephant Man and Platoon) is also a great piece. All of the Bach cello stuff is unbelievable too. |

Ravel himself said he didn't consider it music--just an exercise in orchestration. But I've always loved it too.

im a huge fan of Satie and Stravinsky.
That said, i'm going to vote for Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms. Now this may not be the greatest classical piece ever written, however it is an amazing piece of work. I would even say it was this piece that demonstrated an octatonic tonal system to its fullest. definition of octatonic = 8 tone scale, with repeated 9th as opposed to your normal diatonic 7 tone with repeated 8th. wrote my senior thesis on this piece. |
