Why are they running the board on the river like 2 or 3 times. I don't understand this. Are they making bets on the side too or something?

It's hedging. They played it out three times for 1/3 of the pot each time.

How is this advantageous to the players? If your on a coin-flip situation?

To reduce variance on large hands, they sometimes run the river 3 times, breaking down the pot into 3 even parts. Mo usually runs the river multiple times to keep a player like Ed in the game.

It's not advantageous. It just reduces the variance.
