this sounds like some sort of scheme. i got to thinking, and realized you'd probably hit it on some very long, very wide paved surface that way it would bounce for ever.

for those who don't know golf, hitting a golf ball 1/4 of a mile would be a mammoth shot

It's probably about as difficult as being able throw a football 200 yards (if not moreso).


The golfball bet is old prop-betting story. A guy was once foolish enough to take someone up on the golfball bet, so the guy went out to a frozen lake and hit the ball well over a mile.

Then, there’s Amarillo Slim’s classic bet. He bet several gentleman $38,000 (a ton of money at the time) that he could hit a golf ball at least one mile. By the way, Slim’s book, Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People, is really excellent! The ground rules were set: The ball had to go one mile, and not downhill; he couldn’t hit it off a mountain; he couldn’t hit it out of an airplane; he couldn’t hit it into a moving boxcar; in fact, there were three pages of legal paper filled with conditions. So, Slim went out to a frozen lake in the dead of winter, and teed it up downwind! Two of the chagrined gentleman followed the bright-orange golf ball on snowmobiles for about a mile and a half. But this ball, under these conditions, was like the energizer bunny — still going, and going, and going!

But seriously, avoid this habit if you're at all disposed to it. I've been dipping for two years, and have absolutely no gums left. I've also been a frequent smoker for the last three years. I can go weeks without smoking after averaging a pack a day for a few months, but I can't go twelve hours without a dip. Most people will tell you smoking is addictive not because of the chemical aspect - most smokers smoke too much to even notice the buzz - it's a comfort thing. I guess it depends on the person, but I enjoy the feel of a dip in my lips far more than I enjoy holding onto a stinking stick (which I still love).

Friendly word of caution.

EDIT: dipping IS awesome when you're playing live poker.. smoke breaks are too costly, and few people know what the hell you're doing. Although I did get spotted by a floor person at the Wynn in Vegas, he never actually forced me to stop.
