Hey all,

The first step here is figuring out how often villain will have AK/JJ here. Assume that AA-JJ/AK are all equally likely given the preflop action (adjusted for Hero's cards and the flop, of course). Some people might say that AA/KK is more likely than the math would indicate, due to villain's banter, etc. I would say the opposite; in my experience, QQ-JJ/AK are villain's most likely holdings, given the min-raise and the flat-call. But, whatever your take, make an assumption and run with it.

Once you do that, you'll see that checking isn't an option on the flop if there is a reasonable chance of a bet folding out JJ. It's just a matter of how much to bet. Against an ABC player, half-pot or so is probably best. Against someone described as 'very LAG but good and thinking,' that might not be good, because you're in a miserable spot if he reraises all-in. Unless he is very loose, there is no way that a push is -EV, so I'd probably go with that. The less often he makes a big call with JJ, the better.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that the math would say push on this one...

So, everything you said would make sense if there weren't a basic glaring error in everything you said: villain called you preflop for a reason, which means that he either didn't believe you, in which case a goddamn $5 bet isn't going to change anything, or he can beat a huge hand, in which case a goddamn $5 bet isn't going to change anything.

If you want to represent AA/QQQ, go ahead; there's some optimal frequency for you to do so. But it's not often. And when you do it, make a real bet. I agree that every so often, he has KK and had postponed his decision until the flop, and you can take the pot away from him here. But I'm check-folding the vast majority of the time here.

Oh, and agreed that limp/reraising with 87s is better than limp/reraising with AKo. That should be obvious, though. (And not that limp-reraising with 87s is all that good.)
