Also today on GSN's Jeopardy reruns they were showing an old teen tourney and the contestants [censored] up real bad in wagering. I know this was a tourney so they could get a wildcard into the next round, but I was totally baffled by this.

Final Jeopardy, they all get it right, and here are the scores + wagers = final scores

6800 + 5000 = 11,800
8400 + 3000 = 11,300
8600 + 2200 = 11,000

Actually 7 is a better opener than 5 (although 6 would have been even better) as people don't pick random numbers. Here and here are a few random polls that show what the distribution more likely looks like.
