Mason, could you detail what the nuts and bolts means? I'm guessing basic fundamentals, right?

Re: Cover Contest: Getting Started in Hold \'em -- Second Try

Ok, after trying long and hard I still can't host my cover on the net. I've tried 5 image-hosting services and the same problem keeps bugging me - they all say my image has been uploaded but the preview is blank (red cross) and I can't access it at all.

Can someone please post it for me?? I'll email it. I've mailed Mason but no reply yet.

Hi Caruso:

You have it right. "Nuts and Bolts" just refers to basic fundamentals which are needed in a book for someone just starting out.

Best wishes,
Mason

Should I replace "hold'em 101" with "Nuts n' Bolts" or is it a lost cause....lol

It's a nice design, although not my first choice.

And then there is that left single quotation mark where there should be an apostrophe again.

I love this design.

You have my vote.
The fonts may need a little tweaking, but it's still great.

Also, maybe it's just me, but I think "Nuts & Bolts" should be associated with something rather than just hanging out there by itself. Maybe something like, "The Nuts & Bolts of Texas Hold'em."

*EDIT*
Also, maybe you could find a way to work in the revolver. But this is more of a thought than a suggestion.

Re: Cover Contest: Getting Started in Hold \'em -- Second Try

How about replacing it with "Hold'em Basics", "Foundations for Hold'em", or "Hold'em Fundamentals"?

Gun version

OK, since no one has done the classic gun cover version yet....

First off this is my first post. I have been reading the form for awhile now and thought this is the first thing i could really contribute too.

Here are 3 cover designs i did. They are pretty straight forward nothing to fancy, just clean simple design. I’m sure some of the text is not right but everything is for placement. If one of them are picked we can go over the changes at that point. The images look a little choppy also but that will be fixed once i receive the hi-res files.

A little behind my thoughts on these covers.
The first thing the consumer sees when he picks the book up is the spine. I like keeping the spine clean easy to read and bold so it jumps off the shelf. The second thing is the cover, at that point you got them to pick up the book so they will at least thumb through it if not more. That is why I kept the cover clean and simple and clutter free. There is no reason to have all that text jammed on the front cover when the consumer has already picked up the book. You have there attention they will look at the back. Put your blurbs on the back. They will read it to find out what this book is all about anyway.

Trace.

I am in awe. You're currently ahead in my mind. Leading towards either the first or second. Third, title is hard to read sideways. Change that and it will be just as good.

These are pretty good, but I'm sticking with Glitch.

I just think the simpler look is more appealing.

Here is the 3rd one with the title straight across. I dont think it has the same impact as the sideways one but i do understand that it is a little hard to read. I had to throw the sideways one in there just to get a little funky with out going overbaord.

Re: Cover Contest: Getting Started in Hold \'em -- Second Try

Hey, those are some kick ass covers. If those images are originals, my hat's off to ya.

I did a spine too, as I felt that is an important part of the exterior. However, I know that Mason and Co. have their own certain things they need to put on the back, so I refrained from making a rear cover.

I hope I can just a get a shirt. I'm not sure what I'd do with 2 sets of books anyways.

Caruso329 02-14-2005 02:42 AM

Re: Cover Contest: Getting Started in Hold \'em -- Second Try

I think the horizontal text is much better IMO. Even though the sideways text does add a nice touch, readability is key here and should be your main priority.

EDIT:

Nevermind, I compared them both side by side and I like the sideways one...

Hi Trace,

You just won me over.
Of course, I have said that I prefer the designs without pictures of chips on them.

I really like the simpler look here, and the colors are just awesome. In my opinion, this is your best effort.

Trace by a long shot. The first of the three covers with the blue chips looks like a futuristic british novel (hey I still love it, anything blue rocks)

Nagoos for a more classic twoplustwo look.

Trace, though, thats some freaking talent man. And no truer words have been spoken "game over, man, game over."

Re: Cover Contest: Getting Started in Hold \'em -- Second Try

Hi Trace:

Since the contest is still going on, I need to respond here in a neutral manner.

The back cover will follow our standard design with the front cover's color scheme. That is on the bottom will be the bar code, the Two Plus Two logo, the small box recommending our web site, and the larger box with the Greg"Fossilman" Raymer quote. Above that will be the the large box with verbage describing the book and on the top will be the title and author's name. Also, somewhere on here will be the author's picture. Because of this I only requested that a front cover be designed.

Best wishes,
mason

Hi Nagoo:

It looks like we'll give out a few more shirts than originally planned. By the way, I wore the prototype to The Mirage tonight when I met with a Two Plus Two group, so maybe on one of these forums, probably B&M, there will be a comment on how it looked.

best wishes,
Mason
