To illustrate how this is not so cut and dry, I will give you this extreme example from our two hands:

1. You have Q9. Flop is 983. Turn is a king.

2. You have AA. Flop is KJT. Turn is a king.

Would you take the one that leaves you top pair or the middle pair?

IMO the AA is almost worthless while the Q9 still has a shot. As a matter of fact, if we are trailing in both hands, Q9 usually has more redraw outs than AA in this example. So, it isn't always about which hand you hold in the rank of poker hands (i.e. being behind with top pair vs. being behind with middle pair).
