Wasn't it Chris Elliott he did this with? It's possible I'm thinking of the Elliott/Mull version, but I could have sworn it was Conan and Elliott.

I don't remember who Conan did it with first, but it might well have been Chris. Pretty likely, since it was Chris's bit and it's something Chris could bring with him to spice up his appearance. But Chris had done it earlier already on his cancelled show, Get a Life, with Mull.
