Am I the only one who doesn't hate the Giles deal as much as everyone else? Bernie and Brown are dropping off the payroll, and if they don't make any other big deals they won't have given up any prospects and won't spend that much this offseason. The team can afford it, they havent made any other big FA deals yet.

The other reason you should hope the Yankees get Giles, is so the Blue Jays don't get him. That team is starting to look pretty good next year, and if they add a bat and another arm, they could be pretty tough.

Offensively Giles is a stud. Watching him for the last 6+ years in San Diego. He also has that "it" factor when it comes to clutch hitting. There is a reason LaRussa has been trying to get him for years.

"We had better pitching then, no?"

Well, Guidry went 43-11, so, I would say yes. (Maybe he can pitch next year?)

Speaking of which, I guess they're letting Gordon go? Who's going to set up for Rivera, me?

Flash wants a 3 year deal. Supposedly the Yanks are taking a hard line 2 year approach. I read the Phillies want to bring him in to close. Bah

So, yes, you. Maybe Farnsworth, who will be overpriced and not as good. This whole "lets be fiscally reasonable this year thing because we really screwed the pooch last year" might be really, really bad. OTOH, maybe we get stellar performances out of our starters who remain healthy all year and we get staright to Mo all the time. Hell, maybe Mo can even play CF too. You know he has the arm...

People have been talking about moving Jeter to CF for years. Jeter would make a good CF, given his great range on pop-ups - he's one of the best shortstops on fielding popups.

Jeter has a good arm, too. I also think he would be at least an average centerfielder, and perhaps even better than that.

Jeter would most likely be well above average in center. I don't think the Yanks would even consider the move if they thought he'd only be average in center.

not interesting. never gonna happen.

[/ QUOTE ]

You mean like how 2 years ago there was no way A-Rod would be willing to play 3rd base?
I think Jeter would be the more likely one to be asked to move to CF. He respects Torre enough to say yes if asked.

[/ QUOTE ]

though it was a surprise, arod's move was more likely, because he had to get out of texas. and there's noone he'd yield the SS spot for other than jeter.

before they make a move like that, you gotta consider the benefits of what that will accomplish. one : whoever moves to CF has got to be above and beyond replacement level at CF. i don't doubt that jeter and arod can be above average, but they are that much more valuable at their current/natural positions. second, whoever replaces the SS or 3B spot has got be above and beyond replacement level because they have to match that of jeter and arod. that's hard to do, since you are replacing the yankee captain or, alternatively, a two-time mvp. good luck to whoever gets that job (Eric Duncan?).
