Re: M\'s and Manny?

Granted, last year was not one of his better years either. Of course there is no reason to think he will improve, since he is getting a little older. I think the bottom line is they keep him in BOS and he plays LF or he goes to a team where he DHs.

. Manny is the best right handed hitter in baseball right now.

thats part of the reason, the other part is fenway. Lots of balls hit the wall and comeback to the lf really fast makin it easy to get guys goin for two.

[/ QUOTE ]
Except that he had 3 years of 10+ assists in Cleveland, including a career high 19.

manny has tons of assists because runners will always run and take extra bases off him. for every 5 assists manny gets, runners will take waaaay more than 5 extra bases. assists are pretty useless, the best OFs in the game usually don't have many assists.

I'll give you Albert.

Putting Derek there is absurd. Run of the mill productive first baseman who had a fluke season.

Alex and Manny are close. Could be aruguments for either one. I think Manny's abilities to drive in runs year after year make me choose him.

umm... yeah. Both Alex and Manny have driven in 100 runs the last 8 years.

Alex > Manny at the plate going forward. Easily.

Also, Why is the Derek Lee year a *fluke*? hes 29 and has been a solid offensive player for a few years now. Could be he peaked later than others.

Choosing Manny over any of these players going forward would be an awful decision (save for perhaps Lee, but even then I think he brings more to the plate the next 3 yeas). He is not even on the same playing field as A-rod anymore due to the positions they play and the level they play them at.

What exactly are you arguing anyways? Manny is a great offensive player but is horrific in the field, which takes away from some of his offensive value. He will be 34 this season and his production has been on the decline since he turned 30. Personally I love the guy, but just looking at the good and avoiding the bad when evaluating a player makes no sense.

IMO, Manny has more value to other teams because the red sox cant DH him because of of Ortiz. Put Manny in the DH slot and not only will it slow his decline at the plate but also negate his shortcomings in the field.

when manny was peaking a couple years ago and was a right handed god at the plate, yes, then they were close. they are moving in opposite directions now though.

He has horrible range. His defense costs his teams at least 10 runs in the field.

I am not trying to defend Manny's defense, but Fenway LFs historically do very poorly with these defensive metrics. I'm not really sure why.
