Stealing is stealing.

[/ QUOTE ]Agreed.

Guess this js the new thread for this discussion

ok. I agree very strongly that stealing is stealing. Yes walmart can absorb it alot better than your poor neighbour, so I'd be more likely to accept a mistake in my error from them..
however I do not actually believe that it's better or even ok to steal from wal mart or any 'big "The man" organization' just because they are so big/uncaring/budgeting for it. How can you change your mind about the crime depending on the victim? there needs to be objective criteriae for what stealing is - and there are.

Ok, another example. (Med school interview question)
Would you report someone you didn't know for cheating on an exam?
Would you report your good friend?
What about if its the giant medical liscensing exam?

You shouldn't present different answers depending on the people involved.. right?

Stealing is stealing and while I could care less if you kept the wal mart cashier's error, justifying it by saying that they are big-corporation is just so... so weak, so silly.

Re: Re cashiers error

I would return it primarily because it's the right thing to do. I also wouldn't want to risk being barred for dishonesty at a site where I make significant money over what is likely to be a trivial amount. They will do their books and the error will be discovered.

Re: Re cashiers error

I went for the $5k+ option. I would not want to be responsible for the cashier getting in trouble, and in any situation where something like this has happened (I was charged too little, given too much back, etc.) I have always pointed out the error. But $5k... that is a VERY significant amount to me, and money that could go towards a new car (seeing as how my transmission is about shot), tuition, books, etc.
