Straight, but not in a shot glass with a line on it.

Rebel Yell is available a lot of places. If I can get it here it's widely available. Not as bad as I expected either.

Hmm, maybe you just can't find it anywhere in WI cuz people in WI know nothing about whiskey. They all just drink beer and brandy.

No average priced malts. My favorite average priced whiskey isn't a scotch but is Makers Mark bourbon, which calls itself "whisky" instead of the more usual "whiskey" used for American whiskies. The Scots might be offended, but oh well. It's ok to drink it on the rocks IMO, unlike a malt. Or as described. If you like Jameson try some malts next. Then try some bourbons too. Good malts tend to cost more. A lot of people suggest Glenlivet or Glenfiddich to start, but I never liked these when I first tried them. It took Macallan to convince me. If you like the Jameson you may also want to try Tyrconnel single malt Irish. It isn't too expensive.

Knob Creek is a decent bourbon; from the same distributor though you are better off going for Booker's, which weighs in with a 126-proof punch. It's smooth as bourbon can be, and not intollerable at around $60 a bottle.

As for scotch, I'm a big fan of Balvenie. It's a nice smooth highland that's pretty reasonably priced. Right now I keep a bottle of 15-yo single-cask on my desk for emergency access.

If you search the archives you will find a few threads about this subject...a few good reviews and comments are burried in there.
