I also follow the standard of "closest to left of the button"

Using the high card in hand/high suit rule can work also, if you set that up beforehand.

Make one single/simple rule so there is no argument about "arbitrary" favoritism in chip decisions.

(Of course, if there's a fight about a solitary low-denom chip, then someone needs to get dropped from the invitation list)
