Me with $200k cash:

1) Home paid off. (Would leave around $15k)
2) Nice down payment on a new car for the wife.

Then I'd take the rest and by myself a piece of gum.

Yeah, definitely. Mutual funds are great and all, but a house is an investment you get to use while it gains in value.

1) http://www.ingdirect.com - start up an on-line savings account with a small portion of it that you would like to have access to. they have really good rates.

2) http://www.fidelity.com - go start up a ROTH IRA and max that thing out.

3) buy a house and live in it.

4) transfer anything left over to tpir90036 on 'stars.
