Don't you think where you live has alot to do with what you are exposed too, granted I can find all of these bands but if no-one in my region is listening to them then I have to be a disadvantage compared to a region where this kind of music is prevelant.

I agree to an extent. I hear about this stuff through friends, and opening acts for shows and what not. But...really with the internet the answer to this is "no".

Armageddon made $200 million. More than 62 million people voted for Bush.

Just because the masses like something doesnt make it good. And just because they dont, doesnt make it bad.

But, if you dont want to put the effort in, thats up to you. But, I get a lot more out of music that tends not to get a lot of mainstream play.

Yeah I know the internet makes it pretty easy but you have to know at least one band in that genre that can lead you into all the other good music that is out there.

Re: Nominations for Best \"Rock\" Album of 2005

This year was pretty disappointing for new music, especially compared to last year. Anyway the best album of 2005 is:

Spoon - Gimme Fiction

Honorable mention to:

Doves - Some Cities, and
Giant Drag - Hearts and Unicorns.

Anyway, I often tend to classify albums in my mind not by when they came out, but by when I heard them. In that case the following albums are all ones that I got into this year, but were released earlier (all of these records are far better than anything listed above, or anything in this entire thread):

Autolux - Future Perfect
Blonde Redhead - Misery is a Butterfly
Stereolab - Dots and Loops

No doubt it is kinda of like pandora's box with the internet once you find a band or small genre you like. But finding that one band in a genre like this is alot easier if people around them are listening to it.

you made a list of the 10 best rock albums of 2005 without including a single band that is widely popular. if this was CMI's 10 favorite albums of 2005 that would make sense, but its not. Note the 5 artists/bands you listed as the greatest of all time. What did they all have in common? the fact that they were all widely popular. It is the same in any art form. Those who are recognized as the greatest in their field are those who were most popular in their field. I agree it is "stupid" to criticize someone's tastes as people can listen and like whatever the hell they want, but if someone has a limited range of music they listen too, I can't respect their preferences for best artist or album of the year.

Plus while music, like art, food, etc. is very subjective it doesn't mean you can't create a framework to judge its relative value overall, similar to art and food.

There's so much Audioslave hatin' going on in here. Cornell rules. Out of Exile should definitely be a nominee, along with Metric-Live It Out, Broken Social Scene, The Mars Volta-Frances The Mute and NIN-With Teeth.
