Have you watched Snatch or Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels? These are important for anyone looking to impress girls with their knowledge of trendy counter culture. Also great movies.
Next on the list should be Boondock Saints. Watching some old Bogart flicks is good for the artsy chicks too.

No, I have not seen Kill Bill, but it's a movie that I have been wanting to see. Would you recommend it?

I would. I can't say that you'll enjoy it. Kill Bill is a different movie but it has alot of similiar characteristics that Pulp Fiction contains. Give it a go.

IMO I believe that second half of Kill Bill to be better.

Re: Pulp Fiction.

ur problem was that u went into the movie expecting enlightenment or something beyond what u had ever seen before. u r not gonna get that, espcially the last part since it was an aclaimed movie from a decade ago.

expectations change everything. the same thing happened when i saw jarhead, everyone i saw it with was expecting Full Metal Jacket or something like that. when they didn't get that they said they hated it. had i expected a social commentary, i probly would have really liked it.

Not liking Pulp Fiction is stupid.

Re: Pulp Fiction.

Yeah, I was just expecting too much. I'm not saying it is a bad movie, parts of it were pretty good. But overall I was just kind of disappointed.

Please watch/buy the following movies:

Cool Hand Luke
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Das Boot
MASH
Glengary Glen Ross
The Godfather

Post a trip report.

BTW - One's collection really doesn't have much to do with their taste in movies. I mean, I own XXX fer chrissakes.

XXX.

WTF.

Seriously.

Alright, I'll watch a few of those(I've already seen The Godfather, but it was on cable, so a lot was edited out. I also caught about 30 minutes of Outlaw Josey Wales at a friends house, looked pretty good.

I buy movies I like. If I don't like a movie, I won't buy it. If I own a movie, that means that I like it. So, it might not be true for you, but my movie collection reflects my taste in movies. Pretty dumb statement, by the way.

No but when you go on internet and make a post in a forum saying

[ QUOTE ]
I felt like there was no point to this movie, other than seeing people get their heads blown off and watching a big black

then probably you are not mature enough to get it.

Re: Pulp Fiction.

Alright, I obviously don't understand this movie. I realize that change is a theme here(Butch going back in the pawn shop to help Marcellus, even though Marcellus is the most dangerous person to him at the time, and Jules going from being a hitman to following Jesus and being a good bible toting Christian)

Is there some deeper meaning? Please, somebody explain it to me.

Not really a dumb statement at all. I have about 400 movies, I don't like them all.

Re: Pulp Fiction.

I didn't say that I am mature enough to watch every movie out there. I said that I can digest a lot of the movies that I am not "supposed" to watch until I am 17. For what it's worth, I feel I am smarter than 90% of kids my age(but then again, who doesn't?) I think a lot of people I know would watch the movie, be like "whoah, that was badass, Jules and Vincent are coldblooded killers, don't [censored] with them!!!"

A few would watch it, and be able to appreciate it's deeper meaning. I'm in neither of these categories.

David04 11-27-2005 01:11 AM

Re: Pulp Fiction.

Then stop buying movies you don't like. It doesn't make sense to me that a person's collection would not consist of movies that they like watching.

fluxrad 11-27-2005 01:17 AM

Re: Pulp Fiction.

You have to watch the movie for the little things, not the overriding theme (of which there was little). You have to be able to see the internal struggle that Butch has when he's talking to Marcelus (i.e. the struggle between self interest and pride). You have to be able to see the irony in Jewels' search for salvation and the absolute non-tragedy of Vincent's death (oh God, sorry for the spoilers!). These are just a couple of things I can remember off the top of my head. I haven't seen the movie in a couple of years.

But you don't have to derive an all encompassing theme from the movie because it is, in the end...pulp fiction. Maybe that's the point.

But what you forget is that this movie resurrected John Revolta's career, and therefore is among the greatest crimes ever committed against humanity.

Thanks a lot. That makes sense. And you're right, I was looking for one overall theme. Like you mentioned, there really wasn't one.

It depends on which one you saw first.

People who saw "Reservoir Dogs" first like it better, because they had never seen anything like it before.

(Me? I like "Dogs" better. I saw Dogs first. It blew me away, it was like nothing I had ever seen before.)

Incredibly overrated, when I was done watching the only thought I had was "That's it?" I started off good, and then the stories were crossed paths...then it was over. I felt like there was no point to this movie, other than seeing people get their heads blown off and watching a big black

Damn, how did I forget to mention the briefcase? Like half of the movie is centered around that goofy glowing briefcase, and you don't even find out what is in it.

but he copied a lot of them from Godard and other French new wave directors (along w/ others), so you probably should go to that source as well, just to be complete.

Yeah, I do need more movies. Quality over quantity is definitely how I feel about movies though. I'm not trying to pretend that I didn't like the Waterboy, it just isn't up to par with the rest of my DVD's. I forgot, I also have Tommyboy, which is another really funny movie.

One of my favorite things about Pulp Fiction is the dialogue. It's both very realistic, and very witty which is not an easy combination.

Am I the first person to actually post something good about Pulp Fiction? The amount of dick waving here is ridiculous? OMG YOU LIKE TUPAC BUT NOT PULP FICTION. LAAME. I'M C00LER THAN J00. PWNED. This is why many people hate OOT.

Re: Pulp Fiction.

Pulp Fiction is one of those rare movies which appeal to people who can get a bit higher on their abstract thinking level than average.

You dont watch that kind of movies for the plot, you dont watch for action or for deep emotions.

You watch it for absurd fun, for witty dialogs, for style and undefined "something" that just hangs in the air there.

You just have to like those kind of movies - where form&style is far more important then content.

When i look back at my favourite movies - they are just like that : not much of a sense in plot, but tons of fun to watch again and again.

Examples ?

Swingers - guys hangin out in LA, hitting on girls
Big Lebowski - guys hanging out in LA, going bowling
Human Traffic - guys hanging out in UK, going clubbing

So, nothing really happens in those movies - but i know every frame of each by heart.

M.
