I played chess from about age 11-22. My main problem was that I did not like to memorize openings, and I felt that I was smart enough to hold my own on basic theory if I could get away from a standard opening.

So as White, I used to play a lot of 1. b3 (Larsen's Opening). It put me at a theoretical disadvantage even as white, but when playing against those in my peer group (1500-1650 ratings) I could make the game into a muck and get Black to overextend themselves attacking the kingside. Plus in 30/G high-school tournaments, it would put my opponents (who often had never seen the opening before) at a time disadvantage pretty quickly.

If I had to play somebody good, I'd play some sort of safe boring king-pawn opening.
