You are absolutely right. The mistake in your statement is in the fact, that you think he will have the best hand in this case the vast majority of time. Which is not true.
You are afraid to loose. Although bet - is agressive play, in this case bet and fold to raise with the aim of not just being beaten by better flush - is weak-tight thinking.

It is doubtfull that an average player even on 0.5/1 will call with 3h or 5h BOTH turn and river, he will rather fold to your turn bet. By checking turn and betting river we are at least shure he will call once.
Furthemore DO NOT FORGET, that about half the time the opponent will not have flushes in this case AT ALL! What is then?

no, it isn't. they will call you down with much worse hands than other flushes. you will definitely get a call here and a river fold from a 5x hand without a heart, and that's only if they don't improve on the river.

you give these people too much credit.
