Free showdown raise was my bread and butter move at 5/10. It works amazingly well. Be ready to drop it/drastically reduce it once you get to 10/20 though.

I'm still curious if folding pocket pairs >4 is the main reason to raise or if there is more to it.

It's fine. Sometimes I bet the river. Sometimes I call call because you probably have him reverse dominated so him folding a hand with outs has less value.
