Re: A question worthless enough for the general forum.

A few weeks ago I was playing 3/6 limit at a local casino. The board read: AKT66. At showdown a player with KT announces "two pair," two players with Ax both say "I have an ace." The dealer then pushes the pot to the player with KT. As the dealer rounds up the cards one of the players with an A in the hole says, "Wait, wasn't there a pair on the board?" The floor was called to the table, and we had to wait several minutes as the entire hand was reconstructed.

Yes, the dealer really screwed up. But the whole debacle could have been averted had one of the players with Ax in the hole simply announced, "I have aces up."

The term has vrtually no meaning at all. Everytime someone says it you have to look at the board to see if they have 2 pair or just 1pair with a pair on board.

Aren't you going to look at the board anyways? Do you never look at the board after a player flips over his hole cards and announces his hand? If I have a set and someone else announces a straight, I'm going to look at the board to make sure they have a straight.

i also think it's dumb.

is it possibly some kind of an angle-shoot? i've seen players announce 2-pair when the board is already paired. so maybe it's AT884 and they have a pair of 2's and announce '2-pair' and hope the other guy is an idiot and folds a better hand without even seeing it.

It sometimes seems like some sort of game of "i can read the board really quickly and if you can't keep up with me I'm going to talk you out of the pot."

Some guys I think would say '2-pair' on a board of A3322 even when not holding an ace in hopes that the other guy will fold in a likely split-pot.

But as for saying the 'aces-up' thing....I also think some players say it just because they think it sounds cool.
They're wrong of course..but since when did that stop anybody?

I've seen this, and a similar situation where a guy has 3 pair but his pocket pair was counterfeitted and it is definitely an angle every time. The other people are just dumb.

And agree again I've never said anything "up" - two pair is two pair and I'll be specific if necessary, plus I always quickly follow up by turning over my cards anyway.
