A lot of the time, when he has not much, you get an extra bet.

Some of the time, when he has a T, an overpair, a strong draw, or feels like having a good old pissing match, you lose multiple bets.

Also, if you want your opponents to be afraid of your raises, you must raise with the goods when you can.

"WTF? He's always raising my ass, then when I look him up he has a frickin boat." This is what you want him to think. Not: "eh, I got off easy."

I raise the flop. Raising and checkraising the flop with monsters induces calldowns from horrificly bad hands.
