If the dealer is going to let me choose from one of the 46 unseen cards then you know there are exactly 9 outs and your odds are now 46:9.

But If I only get to choose from the remaining cards in the deck, then on average there will be 6 left.

i dont think you are suppose to divide 506 by 306.
ratios are not fractions
I think you are suppose to take the greatest common denomintor (I am not a math guy though, I just know that on average 3 of your outs have already been dealt)

Just answer the question....If I deal out 20 cards, how many will be spades on average?? It's a very simple question. The answer is 5.

Yes, but if you are delt two spades, will the remaining 18 cards on average contain 3 spades? The answer is no.

No. According to your very flawed way of reasoning it will remain 29 cards (52 - 20 - 3 = 29). In your way of reasoning 6 of these will be spades (13 - 5 - 2 = 6). The chance of hitting the flush would be 23:6 or 3.8:1 (29 - 6 = 23).

Do you really not see why your reasoning is incorrect?

A ratio gives you odds, greatest common denominator gives you a probability
