After you exclude plain stupidity or addiction the next best answer is variance. And this explains why fish stay longer in limit (more variance) than no-limit (less variance)
Variance is the reason why bad players think they are good when they lose money ("i'm only running bad and getting bad beats") AND of course when they win money (for obvious reasons).

A lot of the posters here (myself including) will make money in certain lower limit games only to jump to higher limits and lose a big amount of their BR until they are satisfied it's not "due to variance".
