I guess I can thank allvegaspoker.com for that handy misinformation. Community colleges nearby that he could do for a year and then transfer?

This is the answer. Why would you take basics at a cost of 18k/year when you can take the exact same classes (only easier) at community colleges for less than a third of that? Get a 4.0 through 30-45 hours and try that GPA on for size applying for both loans and scholarships.

FAFSA link is completely useless. If you understood the FAFSA you would realize this is exactly what is failing him since his parents won't cosign.

On a side note all this junior college stuff, he would much prefer to go to this initial school as it has one of the best programs in the country for what he is specifically interested in. You cannot replicate this program elsewhere and yes it does start from freshmen year. In fact it is basically just an expensive junior college as it is a 2 year program.

He needs to make sure he isn't being claimed as a dependent on his parent's tax returns anymore. I can't remember exactly how long he needs to be "independent" but it's like 18 mo. or maybe two years. Once he achieves this independent status he can qualify for almost any student loan because his income won't be high enough to interfere.

You guys are telling a high school graduate to get a job to pay for 18,000 a yr of college tuition... right.

I would check out banks and see what they will offer you.

I was assuming they were telling him to get a job instead of going to college.

a private institution is the last place to look. just have him go to the financial aid at school and explain his situation, they'll be glad to help him

Yes. The financial aid officer is your friend. They will hook you up. See if you can claim independence from your parents for better loans/grants.
