He was implicitly threatened.
When on the receiving end of a threat demanding an action A, people tend to want to do the opposite of A, especially when they perceive the threat to be a bluff. The desired effect is to reduce the bluffing frequency of one's opponents (while this may not be a good idea in Hold'em, it is often a good idea in life). |
