why can't i see any white pawns in either of those puzzles?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because white doesn't have any pawns in the first, and adds one in the second?

I don't think that works. I think the answer is Qb2

As a matter of fact, I don't think this works...

Edit: Oops, I'm too slow...someone else pointed that out

there appears to be more than one answer unless somebody can tell me why Qa7 doesnt work?

Re: My solution

1. Qa7 f1=Q 2.Qh1+ Bh2 (2.Nf2+ Qxf2; 2.Rh8+ Bh2) right?

1.Qb2 f1=Q 2.Qh8+ Bh2, other checks are blocked, right?

EDIT: Wait: 1.Qb2 f1=Q 2.Ng3#; 1.Qb2 f1=N 2.Qg2#; 1.Qb2 Bh2 2.Nxf2#; 1.Qb2 Kh2 2.Qh8#

Success!

Re: My solution

Don't worry, I'm sure you would have gotten it right if you had read the letters and numbers on the side of the board ;-)

Thanks for posting the puzzles though. Always good to keep the calculating skills sharp.
